Romanesque Spain
(c. 1123)

Saint Clement De Taüll is a Roman Catholic church in Spain. This is one of the first churches considered as a place of worship for the Roman Catholic religion. What makes this church so important is all of the artwork it has to offer on the inside, a common theme seen in these churches in the art exhibit. The art was new for the time period and really never been done before in Christian churches. This church features exquisite architecture, especially for a church. Overall, the purpose of this building, architecture, and art inside are what make this building important to history.

Early Medieval: Carolingian Empire and Vikings
(c. 1125-1150)
The Borgund Stave Church is a church for the "Church of Norway" denomination; it is located in Norway. The name comes from the way it was built, it was made out of wood boards called staves. This church features beams and woodwork and color schemes specific to the Medieval time period. During this time period stave churches were very common, but it is rare to see one being built this way today. The way this church differs so much architecturally from other churches throughout history is what gives it importance.

Dome of the Rock

Early Islamic
(c. 688-692)

Dome of the Rock, an Islamic shrine in Jerusalem, is very sacred to the Islamic religion. It gets its name because it is built over a sacred rock. This specific religious building is important because of the architecture and detail on the outside and inside. On the outside there is an obvious grand mosaic across it, what is special about the mosaic is that it actually features Arabic script. Another thing to point out is that the dome actually features a lot of Byzantine influence, which is the empire that ruled before this was built. Overall, the significance, detail, and beauty of this religious temple make it very important to history.

Introduction

Religion in an integral part of art throughout history, especially moving into time periods where great architecture was able to be built. The three time periods chosen convey the image of how different religious architecture is for each religion and time period. Although these buildings are extremely different stylistically, they are tied together in their purpose. The first image depict the Dome of the Rock, which is an Islamic shrine used to express the faith of the Islamic people. The next image is Saint Clement De Taüll, a church used for worship in the Roman Catholic religion. The last image I decided to include was the Borgund Stave Church, much like the Saint Clement De Taüll, it is a parish church used for the worship of a Norwegian denomination of Christianity. This purpose of this exhibition is to explore the purpose of how and why these religious buildings differ so much stylistically, but also to highlight different religious architecture seen across the world.
