When the narrator was seven years old, his brother -Doodle- was born. He was red from the waist down, and couldn't walk correctly for many years. One day, the narrator -Doodle's older brother- decided to teach him how to walk, and showed their parents when he finished teaching Doodle. Then, the narrator taught Doodle other things, like running, swimming, etc. A short time after that, they discovered that a scarlet ibis had fallen to its death from the bleeding tree in their yard. That same day, Doodle and the narrator went out, and were caught in a storm. They ran and ran to get to safety, but Doodle was left behind. When the narrator found him, Doodle had bled out through his mouth, and, he had a look similar to that of the dead scarlet ibis.
