Theme: The theme being conveyed in this quote is Esperanza’s requirement to cope with her family’s large size and lack of money, and Cisneros uses comparison in order to portray the rented basement in relation to to the importance of someone’s baptism and using imagery when saying “dancing and tamales and everyone’s kids running all over the place”.

Summary:  Everyone is dancing and laughing at their party, but esperanza isn's and is just sitting on a chair in dissapointement of her shoes and refuses to dance for a while, until she does.

Theme: The theme that is being conveyed is her dissatisfaction of her poverty, this device helps with conveying this theme in the sense that it shows that her mom is having fun and dancing and enjoying the party, but Esperanza just sits there mad that she dosen't have enough money to pay for new shoes to match her dress.
