After that, Mr. Keating uses a kinaesthetic experience to engage the pupils and make clear how he approaches teaching poetry. He instructs his students to tear off the section of their poetry books' introductions that reveals the algorithm used to grade poetry. Instead of treating students as recipients of knowledge, Gruwell treats them as creators of knowledge, which is a cornerstone of both critical and student-centered teaching. By assisting the students in writing and publishing their own stories, she gives them more agency. The students' ultimate assignment is to "put [their] diaries together in a book, exactly like Anne Frank," according to Gruwell. Eva says in a voiceover, "She told us we have something to convey to people. We had stopped being just students in a class. We had our own stories to tell and our own voices as authors, so we mattered. Students can critically consider the sociocultural injustices that shape their lives by writing about them. Gruwell enables each student become a writer, learning writing by doing it, rather than having them memorization the steps of professional writing (such as drafting, writing, editing, and publishing). Progressives think that education should put the student first, not the curriculum or the teacher. This educational concept places a strong emphasis on the need for pupils to actively experiment with their ideas. The questions that learners have as a result of experiencing the world are the foundation of learning. This educational philosophy is not relevant to the South African context. In South Africa the emphasis is placed on covering all of the content prescribed by the CAPS at the end of the term or year, this does not enable the learners to actively experiment with their ideas that may lay a foundation for learning. The end goal for South African teachers is to cover the prescribed material without changing the curriculum the same way as Erin Gruwell did. 

Constructivist classrooms place a strong emphasis on building on what students already know while focusing on their questions and interests. They also place a strong emphasis on interactive learning. Students work primarily in groups, teachers have dialogues with students to help them construct their own knowledge. This educational philosophy is revelant to the South African context as some learners are allowed to work in cooperative groups to construct knowledge of the current grade with the knowledge of the previous grade.
