Gleevec® is a cancer drug that has been used to treat leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), as well as other cancers. The drug has been in use for over 15 years now and has been proven effective in patients with certain types of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). It works by inhibiting the Abl protein kinase, which signals cell division in normal cells. However, cancerous cells do not respond to the drug’s mechanism, making Gleevec® an important weapon in the battle against cancer.

1. Gleevec was discovered by accident!
Scientists initially developed Gleevec to treat another disease. But the molecule had a strange side effect: it stopped the growth of cancerous cells. They noticed that when they removed the molecule from the mix, the cancer cells started growing again.

2. Gleevec is a very old drug!
It was for the first time in the world described in 1992 by Dr. Brian Druker, who is currently Professor of Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Gleevec, or a specific inhibitor STI-571, has been formulated specifically to treat Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). This medicine has given hope to thousands of patients with CML and other diseases related to Bcr-Abl tyros

3. Gleevec is the only drug of its kind!
Gleevec, a cancer treatment drug, is the only one of its kind. It's so unique that it has been called a "magic bullet" because it targets specific genetic mutations in patients' cells. Gleevec blocks the abnormal protein produced by the genetic mutation, effectively targeting and destroying only cancerous cells while leaving healthy cells alone. This targeted approach to fighting cancer is very different from conventional chemotherapy drugs which attack all rapidly dividing cells regardless of their health status.

4. How does Gleevec work?
Gleevec is a pill that fights cancer. The drug is derived from a rare class of compounds called kinase inhibitors, which block the activity of enzymes in the cell. Gleevec inhibits an enzyme that causes cells to grow abnormally and encourages them to die prematurely.

5. What are some side effects?
Gleevec is an anticancer medication that targets the abnormal protein produced by a genetic mutation. Gleevec was approved by the FDA in 2001 and has been used to treat patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) ever since. The drug stops cancer cells from dividing, which helps to slow the growth of a tumor.

For more information:- Imatinib gleevec
