Feminism: The belief in social-economic and political equality of sexes. Normally represented on the behalf of women’s rights and interests especially in how they represent women.

This image represents the concept of Feminism because it shows a magazine displayed labeled “women’s interests” and represents a female subject on the cover rather than male. These magazines vary in how they can help women in ways such as health, fashion, communication, and socially. Additionally, the fact that the store has a section for feminine magazines helps by creating inclusivity for all by combining it with other sections in the magazines.

Deeper Connections:
How do people interact with this?: People interact with this by observing the wide collection of magazines that are created for a feminine audience and do little to discourage others from it. By making it its own unique section within the magazines people can easily find what they are looking for in terms of Feminism.
What does this/ it mean?: This means that stores are cultivating different areas of their stores to be more inclusive to other genders in order to appeal to anyone. It doesn’t have to be just one sex or the other.

Material Culture: A culture that consists of material things that can influence people. This can be also including abstract ideas or how socializing with these materials can change one’s mindset.

The image represents a big part of materials and social culture: TikTok. At Barnes and Nobles specifically, we are told to sell specific books that cater towards “BookTok” which is a platform in which people share their ideas and creativity while sometimes including material objects, such as books. This image shows a table dedicated to “BookTok” where all of the most popular books that people are “currently reading” & “should be reading” are listed.

Deeper Connections:
Who Benefits from this?: Those who benefit from this are people who are into the “BookTok” craze and also enjoy reading. This is a type of material culture that people often want to get invested in, so they in turn spend a lot of money and try to get invested in the books that are trending in social media and society.

What does this/it mean?: This means that material culture is still very widespread and has a large influence on how stores and people interact with each other.

Discrimination: An unjust treatment of race, age, or sex based on how they are displayed. This is especially used in ways when it comes to certain groups.

This image represents a discrimination for the women in the political system who try to fight against the system in order for more representation. This book represents that discrimination by putting in bold “ELECTABLE” including a little hint as to what the book is about while using the silhouette of a female figure.

Deeper Connections:
Who Benefits from this?: People who are within the “female” community who believe that women should be in the same positions as men, often in political situations. Men are often seen as the leaders in political situations, but this should be beneficial to women because it was written by a woman to address a problem in our government.
What does this/it mean?
This means that even today women are still being mistreated and not allowed to have higher positions like men in our government. It proves that we are still fighting for the equality of rights to work in the government rather than having smaller income jobs

Specifically if how I, situated below the mural piece, decided how to interact with the art that was situated behind me! It is a artistic representation of the feminine art piece titled “We can Do it!”, which was also a very much celebrated symbol of female patriotism.

Deeper Connection:
Who Benefits from this?: Those who have an appreciation for the arts as well as representations of popular works would benefit from this image. It is a definition of how far we have come in displaying our symbols through art throughout time.

What does this/it mean?: This means that “We can Do it!” Still resonates with everyone of all genders and races. It is displayed in downtown Sacramento, a city full of inclusiveness and history! Combined with art it shows the dedication artists have to putting their own art and symbols for the world to see.

Competition: A way in which two individuals, or a group, seek to argue against one another for the sake of obtaining a goal that both are seeking. This can be demonstrated in political debates, sports, work etc.

This image represents competition by the News Article, “The Economist” seeking to expand it’s subscribers by advertising itself with a note saying “expand your worldview”. It also includes benefits on the back as to why you should be supporting The Economist rather than other newspapers because they supply the most accurate news and provide daily subscriptions.

Deeper Connections:
Who Benefits from this?: People who support the Economist as well as the people who run the Economist are easily benefited. These two groups of people work together in tangent to help spread the news and as well support one another. Considering that there are many competitive newspapers out there, the Economist seeks more support from others by giving their subscriptions daily news and rewards.

What does this/it mean?: It means that in order for certain groups to maintain their popularity they must compete with one another in order to remain relevant to today’s changing structure and how we take in news.

Social “Self”: A term in how we perceive ourselves in relation to others. This can also be related to how an individual can build a relationship with others through their own perspective and thoughts.

This term connects to the quest of Alicia Keys song “Girl on Fire”, because it is a song about ones own individual power and learning about a new perspective found within yourself. This is especially relevant because Keys sings constantly about how “this girl is on fire,” how even though her own passion is being enflamed she is still learning more and more about herself. Considering she is also a very popular singer, her “social” self is very distinct from her persona that she displays to her audience.

Deeper connections:
How do people interact with this?: People can interact with this song by singing along and interacting with its lyrics. Simply by reading and envisioning their own selves within the lyrics they are able to understand from Key’s individual perspective her thoughts and feelings.

What might be another way to think about this quest (or an aspect of it)?: Another way to think about this quest is what part of this song resonates with a person more, their pathos, ethos, or logos side? It can also be compared to other songs and what makes this more distinct compared to the others.

(Racism) individual beliefs and practices: The negative beliefs or prejudices that are expressed towards one’s cultural beliefs and language. This can also occur with their behavior and racial discrimination from consciousness.

First of all, when watching this video it made me very uncomfortable because it has happened to me, as both the waiter and the customers. Being bilingual gives me different perspective as well as understanding to respect others beliefs and practices, but this waitress unfortunately didn’t do that. I connected the Racism individual beliefs and practices by how the waitress would rudely respond to the customers when they would respond to her questions. Her increasing aggravation should’ve been instead asking for help from a supervisor or someone who knows the language, if not then trying her best instead of getting frustrated on the spot. It is a perfect example of how individual practices still had a backlash of racism despite us being an “inclusive” society.

Deeper Connections:
Who made/created this? The people who made this put in secret cameras to catch other peoples reaction to certain situations like this. I believe it was also meant for teaching others about the continuing “racist” behavior towards others and was meant to be learned from.

Who benefits from this?: Those who feel like people should learn from the racist comments and try to change their behavior as well as the people who are the ones concerned that their own beliefs and practices are a burden, when they’re not.

Nature: Ones own innate qualities towards human nature especially in genetics. It also is an argument that focuses on how people are shaped by natural environments and interactions which impacts their human behaviors.

Nature represents this most accurately because of where the photo has been taken place, within a burning forest. But most important to note is how the firefighter is taking care of the nature surrounding him by putting out the fire. This is a demonstration of how natural environments shape our behaviors and trying to safe or “nurture” it. It is an important aspect of our human identity which is to nurture and care for those around us, shaping our “empathy”.

Deeper Connections:
Who made this/created this?: The people who made this were most likely those who care about our natural environments and want to provide support for the nature surrounding us. This can also be made by firefighters or natural professionals who want to demonstrate safer ways for us to keep our environments safe.

What is missing from this that is important to note?: Definitely how the fire first started, was it natural or human made? That helps us analyze the social interactions in which we can learn how to stop these occurrences from happening and also our “nurture” side.

Rebellion: Where an individual or group begins to reject cultural goals and societal means of achieving the goal. It focuses more on structural changes in a society.

The song “Holiday” represents the American government and society during the Iraq War. The song is a continuation on how America is still fighting them when there is no point to it, for war will not win anything. This song represents rebellion in a way because the band Green Day is rebelling against America’s actions towards Iraq, singing about its effects on society and how it is affecting everyone.

Deeper Connections:
Who Benefits from This?: Those who benefit from this are those who have the same thoughts as Green Day, that what we as a country were doing was wrong. That we shouldn’t enact war on another country. Other people who can benefit from this are those who seek to fight against the situation.

How do people interact with this?: People interact by this by singing and spreading this song around the society. Additionally, those who have heard the song can resonate with this.

Political Economy: A part of social science which analyzes the relationship of a nations population and its government. This can also make up the market, trade, and law.

This came up during my APPLE News app considering that voting ballots are coming up soon in the mail. I considered this a prime example of a Political Economy because it is making a relationship between the audience/ reader and the nations political government. The way the article reads a the bottom “some states have passed new voting regulations” makes an connection that other national governments are changing and letting people know.

Deeper Connections:
What does this mean?: This means that many Americans have been voting early, prompting others to do the same. This is probably a very useful article in showing how it can be useful for others.

Who made/created this?: The team who created this most likely runs with the ballots or spreads the news about upcoming ballot information. This also can be made by those who want to learn more themselves about new ballot information.
