All of the animals were symbols for different people and he imagined that they were animals because he has a deeper connection with them than humans.

This just shows that if you have enough belief in something, and you have hope you can put your faith into anyone, not just God.

I thought of it as Pi trying to cope or justify what really happened (assuming the human story was true). I wouldn't question one "wild" animal eating another, even as I was reading the part when the hyena ate the zebra it didn't come to me as a bad thing for an animal like the hyena to do; spiders even eat each other but I've never found it wrong. What I did find wrong was the Cook eating another human. Even Pi ate human flesh and he was justifying himself. I think the whole story with animals is Pi's way of lightening what happened on the boat.

As for why Pi made this story with animals, it might serve as a way to cope with the trauma he experienced on the raft, and why he put so many connections to faith and animals in his story, it probably has to do with his background, his father owning a zoo, and Pi experimenting with a lot of religions . I also think Pi may have made it as a purpose for a better story, I think in his perspective, to make his story more valuable to the reader, he must have had to organize his story in a way so its memorable, it tells a lesson, and even at the end of the book, we see the investigators chose to believe in the story with the animals, maybe they just preferred it much more for some reason.

I definitely think that a 100% correct story can be just as meaningful and a "made up" story or a story with modified details. Whenever someone tells a story, they will try to make it seem more believable or more adventurous or whatever they want the story to feel like. This does take away from the honesty, but not the meaning of the story.
