I do remember teachers from a high school visiting Sachigo Lake to meet the Grade 8s who were going out the following fall. One of the teachers looked around and was surprised. Then she said to me that she was caught off guard when she saw that we allowed our kids to wear their baseball caps in class.

I concur. Many a child leaves the North with no concept of how to cope with isolation in the cities. They struggle to break through the confines of city life. Many people look North and see isolation. Our students see home, comfort, and freedom. Where the city dwellers see all the amenities, it's our kids that can be confronted by the isolation they feel

Great list, Joe. It's true that many people head to urban centres for work and school. Unfortunately, this can make it harder to provide services in Northern Indigenous communities. When you have some Indigenous teachers get qualified, a number of them follow their children south. This allows them to work, and be there to protect their children.
