However, since it is so common people forgot to tell the newcomers. 
Brushing curly hair is nothing like brushing straight hair. The first thing you have to remember is: NEVER brush your hair dry. You need to always wet it. If you wet your hair, you will get less frizz and a more control curl. 
I tend to brush my hair during a shower, never before unless it was already wet, then after a shower. I brush my hair from the tips up and in three different sections. Depending on how long or thick your hair is will determine how many sections of hair you should have. 
After I have my hair in its sections, I tend to  brush my hair starting from tips and brushing upwards towards the roots. I use a wet brush to get all the tangles out then a wide tooth comb to get those curls out. 
Of course, I use products while my hair is wet and after it is brush.
