"Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree" The song and the Andrew Sisters during World War II. The song was written as a pledge of loyalty made between two youngle one was sent away to serve in the war. The melody was written by Sam H. Stept and lyrics by Lew Brown and Charles Tobias. It was originally titled "Anywhere the Bluebird Goes", as " version of the nineteenth-century English folk song "Long, Long Ago". The name was changed when it debuted in the 1939 Broadway musical Yokel Boy, starring Judy Canova. After the United States entered the war, Brown and Tobias modified the lyrics to their current form, with the chorus ending with "...'till I come marching home".

Samuel Howard Stept was an American songwriter who wrote for Broadway, Hollywood and the big bands. He almost never used his full middle name and became known simply as Sam Stept or Sam H. Stept. He was born in 1897, in Odessa, Russia, and came to the U.S. at the age of three where he then grew up in Pittsburgh. Early in his music career he worked for a local publishing house as staff pianist, then in vaudeville as accompanist to popular performers of the time. Steptalso wrote songs for Broadway shows like Yokel Boy (1939) and Michael Todd's Peep Show (1950). Stept's output slowed down in the late '40s, and by the late '50s, he was concentrating fully on his music-publishing business.
