The song was written as a pledge of loyalty made between two youngle one was sent away to serve in the war. The melody was written by Sam H. Stept and lyrics by Lew Brown and Charles Tobias. It was originally titled "Anywhere the Bluebird Goes", as " version of the nineteenth-century English folk song "Long, Long Ago". The name was changed when it debuted in the 1939 Broadway musical Yokel Boy, starring Judy Canova. After the United States entered the war, Brown and Tobias modified the lyrics to their current form, with the chorus ending with "...'till I come marching home".

With an upbeat tempo and a strong message, "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" was made extremely popular during World War Two. The apple tree referred to in the song is metaphoric of a wartime relationship. In spite of the distance brought about by war, the homebound lover is expecting his/her significant other to maintain loyalty and vice a versa. No one is to sit under the apple tree with another until the war is finished and the two partners can be together. It is sung from the perspective of both genders.

The song tells the story of the lives of two young lovers during the time of the war. The solider makes a promise with his girlfriend of her loyalty to him while he leaves her at home to serve his time in the war. As stated in the title, he pleads with her "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me), until he has returned. The song takes the point of view from both the solider and his girlfriend, showing they both want to remain loyal to each other, despite the distance between them.
