Aza said this multiple times throughout the book, she said it was like having all these things to say, opinions and expressions and creativity, but being trapped in our own heads and not being able to escape. Aza, however, was never actually trapped in her head, it was her choosing to act on the fact that she felt alone and that no one understood. Aza was afraid that every action she made would get her sick and that's why she behaved the way she did. Even though all along Aza had the power to change her ways and live a different life.

Shawn has always taken after his grandfather's adventurous ways, he uses clues that his grandfather has left for him and finds the mysterious island. This island isn't all mystery though, it's only hidden by a horrific storm, it's been there all along you just have to know where to look. Aza and the island are similar, there isn't some magical force keeping the island a secret just like there isn't anyone keeping Aza in her head. Both are capable of being free and known, they just have to know how to do it.

"Monk" is a TV series, in this show Adrian Monk has OCD just like Aza in "Turtles All The Way Down". Both are compulsive and disoriented and "stuck in their own head". Monk is a detective and works with the SFPD. He is constantly organizing and cleaning because something in his mind just can't stand the fact when things are messy. Aza thinks that she'll catch C diff. with every choice she makes and is terrified when she doesn't put on a band aid. Monk connects to the theme because he also has a choice to change his ways, it's just a different style of thinking, nothing in he mind controls his actions just like Aza's.

Aza has trouble with this concept throughout the book but soon realizes you aren't what goes on in your mind, we are blessed with the ability to chose.

At first Micheal is nervous about making this new change, he doesn't know how to act or what to say but does it anyway with open arms. Both, fragile and scared, have the power to overcome their troubles and not let wealth or voices in their heads take over their life.
