WAN, Wide Area Network, is a computer network that extends over a larger geographical distance. The many users of WANs are business, education and government entities use wide area networks to relay data among staff, students and clients from various locations, either intercity or inter-county locations. A WAN can also consist of multiple LAN networks connected together over a wide distance. This can be used in things such as online shopping e.g. Amazon and Ebay. Many global companies such as Microsoft and Apple have WAN networks this enables the companies to have buildings in different countries enabling a much wider network for marketing and access of other countries social resources.
George.B & Karl. The networks are connected through a router. A WAN could be used by a college, company or organisation because it can be used over a large area and can be accessed from a great distance.

The less powerful clients access the server which they are connected to. They access files and applications which are kept on the server. The server is connected to a LAN or WAN depending on range. The email server controls Emails coming in and out. To ensure protection of the WAN or LAN a firewall is put in place to prevent harmful content getting through and affecting the network. The server is normally controlled by a network administrator who maintains the server and backing up important data to prevent it being harmed by malicious content or data loss.

Peer to peer networks

A peer to peer network is a network that is created when two or more computers are connected together. They are able to share resources, without the need for a server. They are usually found in small offices and business where there is no need for a file server. A big example of peer to peer networking was Napster which used a peer to peer network to distribute music files.
