         <title>Winston Churchill said a group of World War II heroes shortened the war by six months. Today, the townspeople of Wirral honored those soldiers, known as the Cockleshell Heroes, with a memorial plaque. The Cockleshell Heroes are known for canoeing 60 miles through German occupied France to successfully sink six German cargo ships in Bordeaux harbor. </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div> ‘Extraordinary Citizen’ Honored with Memorial Plaque Ceremony</div><div> </div><div>A new memorial plaque in Wirral has been dedicated to preserving the memory of Corporal Albert Laver, a WWII soldier who helped sink enemy ships. Mayor Gerry Ellis unveiled the plaque to an inspired crowd of family and townspeople, saying, “We are all very proud of Bert Laver.”</div><div> </div><div>Albert Laver was one of four men who made it to enemy-held territory in France to destroy German cargo ships in the Bordeaux harbor. As part of the “Cockleshell Heroes” he canoed over 60 miles to achieve this goal, but was later caught and shot by the Germans.</div><div> </div><div>Laver’s nephew, Stuart Laver, attended the ceremony. He said, “My mother always described him as quite a tough little monkey with a good sense of humor.”</div>]]></description>
