I listened to Time for Dinner Ep. 10 and then watched the Race video. One thing that was sparked in me was that no matter what you are "born into" doesn't mean you can't finish the race. 
One take away is that I should allow a space for my students to see that just because you didn't have one opportunity doesn't mean you wont have the opportunity for another.

I listened to the Time for Dinner podcast and then completed the first choice on the CP & E Choice Board. One spark that occurred during the podcast was when Dr. Bauer mentioned Ibram Kendi's quote, (I'm paraphrasing because I don't remember it exactly) that you cannot take chains off of someone and then tell them to get in line and run a race, and expect them to do well, or just as well as someone who was not just in chains. I took from that, that we cannot just give our students quizzes, tests, papers, and expect them to all to do the same, and think that just because someone didn't do as well as someone else, that it is the student's fault. History has an effect on all our students, and most of those effects we don't see in the classroom. But just because we can't see them, doesn't mean we can ignore them.
