What has been done to clean up after the disaster?

Groundwater has been pouring into the damaged reactor buildings. Once the water reaches the reactor it

becomes highly contaminated by radioactivity. TECP workers had to pump the water from reactors to avoid

submerging the important cooling system. The plant’s melted reactor cores, while less dangerous than they

were in the immediate aftermath of the meltdown, Still needed to be further cooled down. TEPCO can’t

simply dump the irradiated groundwater into the nearby sea. The company had to think of a temporary

solution, building hundreds of tanks, each able to hold 112 Olympic-size pools worth of liquid, to hold

the groundwater. So TEPCO finds itself in a race: Can its workers build enough tanks and clear enough

nearby space to store the irradiated water. After that keeps pouring into the reactor at the

rate of some 75 gal. a minute? More than two years after the tsunami, TEPCO is still racing against time

and just barely staying ahead.

How have plants and animals been affected by this event?

The disaster had wide spread negative effects on the plants and animals nearby.

Such as, large population decline, genetic damage, size reduction, slowed growth,

high mortality, and morphological abnormality. Examples: The pale grass blue

butterfly has had a reduction in size and experiencing slowed growth and a high

mortality rate. Macaques(A type of monkey) show low levels of red and white blood

corpuscles as well as declined levels of hemoglobin(A red protein responsible for

transporting oxygen in the blood to the vertebrates).

What are the so called "red-zones"?

The red-zones are areas closed off to the public, due to the high radiation.

The red-zones were located close the reactor buildings, if not inside the reactor

buildings. Due to the high radioactivity the public was allowed in because of the fear

that they may come back sick. The red-zones are also ghost towns, and abandoned

buildings. Some may have to wait decades to ever return to their old homes, some

may never be able to go back.
