Function of Iron

The main function of iron is to carry oxygen in the red blood throughout the body so cells can produce energy that we then use during exercise. This occurs through the digestive process when the food is broken down and absorbed into the blood. Iron also helps remove carbon dioxide when the blood is taken to the lungs for a gas exchange. When the body does not have enough iron to carry oxygen around the body a condition known as iron deficiency develops. This can be managed through iron supplements. Eating iron rich food is important because your body cannot make it itself so it is essential to have plenty of iron in our daily diet. Babies need iron for brain development and growth as it is involved in the development of memory, learning and mental function. Deformities can occur in babies due to lack of iron because their brain does not develop properly.
