"The civic conception of education suggests a very different way to understand the link between education and equality. This understanding begins with the recognition that fair economic outcomes are aided by a robust democratic process and, therefore, by genuine political equality. Thus an education focused not merely on technical skills, but also on what I call participatory readiness, provides a distinct and better way to promote equality through schooling."

Vocational conception is focuses more on the economic conception giving students guidance in skills for securing jobs and working. This is different because instead of being an active member in changing society the vocational conception aims to make you a cog in an ongoing system of working.

Summary

· The central idea is that everything is connected to the title “What is education for?” You can tie the title to the argument and the key terms. To start the Argument is simple, Allen believes students should be taught in a more philosophical way in order to be able to engage more in their community and be socially aware once they graduate. This is said to reject the incoming influx in the teaching of STEM in schools. This showed students not to be themselves or separate themselves as different or unique but instead to make them all mailable pieces to stick in jobs. With this the freedom that students had as well as the creativity and critical thinking is lost in society. This argument could be tied to the evidence given in the metaphor comparing these uneducated students a “ship of fools” and the group of properly educated students a ship of “wise sailors.” A ship of fools is meant to represent the guideless students who lack the critical thinking in the education. A ship full of fools will never go anywhere and is destined to fail and sink. A ship full of fools needs a leader with great critical thinking in order to guide them. This is what a crew of “wise sailors” would do as a team of smart critical thinkers would be able to complete any task they have in mind. The evidence goes with the structural components which is the metaphor previously mentioned as well as having insight from scholars in psychology and education. Backtracking the Key terms of Ship of fools, Wise sailors, Civic Education, Intellectual labor all tie to the argument as well as the title. Lastly, the Implications are that STEM and the way of education should change. Allen argues the current educational system is flawed and would be better off being a system that promotes individuality and free thinking.

· or this we as a class originally read and annotated the text all together. There was a shared google doc of the whole article that in groups we annotated completely. This was very useful for us as my peers helped me discover to evidence and claims that I had originally not seen to begin with. The most difficult part of this project was doing the actual map. I haven’t even heard of an argument let alone created my own one so this was a unique learning experience. One of the positives about the argument map is that It makes the information more concise and digestible. Just seeing a long essay may be intimidating to some like me but the argument map gives the same information more effectively. Doing this mapping process and starting with the macro ideas of the text like the argument, claims, and key terms to the micro ideas such as the different evidences and analysis of the text helps get all the information of the article. My first draft was awful and difficult to do since I did it on word and had no idea what I was doing. It was just a brainstorm without much information but when I switched to padlet the process of making the map became much easier. Not only was it easier to create it looks neater than my original rough draft. I am happy with how it turned out and might consider using an argument map when brainstorming and mapping out my next essay to help me get some main points and evidence across. Argument maps might be the best notes for writing for me since there are no throwaway sentences and every word you read is important
