Women in Missions: Elizabeth Sale

In the 19th Century, women in India were secluded in zenanas, a separate part of the household where solely women resided in insolation. No adult female could venture beyond the confounds of the zenanas unguarded, meaning they did not have access to education or training.

Elizabeth Sale was a missionary who was granted access to a zenana while tending to a sick child. This allowed her to have further access to the women and children in the zenanas. She describes her first visit as such:

I entered a large room where there were several women. They all seemed startled and retired to the further end of the room. I said, “I am your neighbour and am come to see you.” They had never seen a white face before. They began to talk to each other, saying “How does she know our language? Where has she come from? Has she a husband? Has she any children?” I answered all these questions and told them I would bring my children to see them. After a while I asked them if they would like to learn to read. The Babu, standing outside the door, said “No, they have no intellect; they could not learn. Woman is only a beast.” “Oh no, Babu” I said, “the same God who made me made them. Will you let them try to learn?” “Who will teach them?” “I will” I said.

This breakthrough allowed women and children in the zenanas to become educated and provided an opportunity for the gospel to be shared. Women in the zenanas were able to read the scriptures for themselves.

The Baptist Missionary Society describes Elizabeth, and the women who continued her work, saying, "These secluded women were being reached by women who themselves had experienced restrictions."

Elizabeth Sale's story is evidence of the powerful way women can advance the gospel in spaces and places only they can access.

"We must follow a path of contemplation that sees the various dimensions of personhood in order to receive the miracle of each person. This is a path that moves toward integration, from disorder to wholeness. The postmodern approach to sex and gender runs in the opposite direction, into fragmentation, a piecemeal self, where body and psyche and desire are split off from one another and rearrangeable—where the body is not the foundation of personal identity, but rather its lifeless tool.

In contrast, the personalist approach allows us to see each human being as a person, rather than a collection of ever-proliferating labels, and, more importantly, to attune our awareness to the sacramentality of every human body. Bodies are not “just” bodies. Bodies are persons made manifest. The sacramental principle is always at work: the visible reveals the invisible. The body reveals to us the eternal and divine reality of the person—a reality that can only break into the tangible, sensible world through embodiment."

The Queens Daughters in India tells the story of Indian women in chaklas, who were trapped in an “infamous system of legalized vice under which they were slaves” (Bushnell, 17).

Female missionaries were able to listen to the stories of and advocate for women in chaklas in ways no man would have been able to do. Whereas the "Christian" men furthered the divide between men and women, oppressing and abusing women in the chaklas, Christian women served Indian women

Women have a unique ability to intervene in situations where men would not be able to.
