This picture depicts one of the numerous witch trials held in Salem. The accused woman is testifying on her behalf in front of the judge. If one of the Puritan girls accused you of being guilty, you were arrested and shortly put on trial. Evidence was close to none, and the only options were to falsely admit to being a witch, or be executed. Over 200 Salem residents were accused, and 19 of them died.

The Puritans were a group of Europeaners that sought to create a perfect society. They moved to Salem to start their own community. The Puritans had no entertainment and dressed in very dull colors. They had very strict religious practices, and religion was the focus of their lives. With their rampant misogyny and political disputes, Puritan colonies became perfect starting grounds the Trials.

Witchcraft was a serious heresy that was punished by death in Europe. There were many different ways to find witches. People would search for a mark on the body that would prove that that person was a witch. Forcing a witch into a body of water was another test because a witch would float and an innocent person would sink. An intangible way to find a witch was spectral evidence, which was that the person appeared as a specter to their victims.

The witch hysteria began in the kitchen of Reverend Samuel Paris, where a slave named Tituba would watch over two girls named Elizabeth Paris and Abigail Williams. Tituba showed off voodoo tricks and magic, and the group increased to eight girls. They showed off behaviors that declared them as witches. The group admitted to being under the spell of witches, and began accusing townspeople such as Tituba and the town beggar. Tituba confessed to witchcraft and says she saw nine names of the townspeople in the devil's book, which created immense paranoia.

Calvinism was the belief system that the Puritans followed. Started by John Calvin, this theological system included beliefs such as total depravity, predestination, limited atonement, and grace. This belief system was the center of the Puritans' lives. Their society became a theocracy because of these beliefs. The Witch Trials may have came to fruition as a product of their strict beliefs
