For someone who doesn't listen to a wide variety of music and is ignorant to most of music theory, I really enjoyed this book and that Ratliff seemed to cover a variety of music genres in order to support his ideas. There weren't many arguments of Ratliff that I seemed to disagree with as we progressed through this book. All in all it was well written and it really helped me learn so many different aspects of music and how to listen more attentively.

Aspects I liked

The main aspect I liked, pretty much the main theme of his book, was that he chose certain musical elements to address in each chapter then paired songs with each element to help explain what he was talking about throughout the chapter. This book definitely changed the way I listen to music.

Problems to Address

One thing that bothered me was that even though he used a good variety of music genres to explain his elements, he actually left out a few music genres that could have helped him explain his ideas. Even though most people don't listen to rock and roll, metal, or electronic music, I found it disappointing that he rarely dabbled into the rock genre to support his claims of certain musical elements.
