In a country like Brazil where its summer all year-around, women are constantly exposed to the ideal body of tanned and toned, with pert bottoms, thin waists, and large, firm breasts. This puts enormous amounts of pressure on women to look a certain way.
Brazil ranks second in the world — after the United States — in the number of aesthetics-focused plastic surgeries performed (Martina Moraes, 2016). In 2014, the statics stated that Brazil had performed over two million procedures or 10 percent of the world’s total. São Paul, the largest business capital in Brazil has the largest number of procedures. These procedures can vary from face lifts, tummy tucks, butt implants, nose jobs but the most demanded procedure is breast implants.

"Beauty is constantly lived, breathed and incorporated as a social category in southeastern Brazil” as said by anthropologist Alvaro Jarrin. Beauty is seen everywhere in brazil, from televisions, advertisements and even song lyrics. Commenting about a person's appearance is not only socially acceptable, it is comparable to asking about that person's health and displaying concern for them. Brazilians suppose a person must be sick or stressed If a person does not look his or her best.

In Brazil, 95 percent of women want or do change something about their bodied by cosmetic surgery. Beauty is always top priority for Brazilian women and most spend 11 times more on beauty than the UK and Unites States. In a lot of countries cosmetic surgery is frowned upon, but in Brazil cosmetic surgery is shared publicly. For Brazilian women plastic surgery isn’t about becoming for beautiful or wanted, its about showing you have money. "There are really no ugly people, there are only poor people” is a harsh expression that is heard throughout Brazil.

Summary

After researching Brazil's beauty culture I was shocked. For me I always thought that Brazil had some of the most beautiful women In the world. I was stunned by the amount of plastic surgery women will get to look beautiful. It saddens me that women in Brazil think they need all that plastic surgery to feel good about themselves or to show their wealth. I found it interesting that Brazil was one of the top countries for cosmetic surgery. I had no clue it was such a massive industry over there. As I researched I discovered that the traditional figure for Brazilian women is slowly changing to american standards. I wasn't surprised by this because in today's society everywhere you see are women with big boobs and skinny bodies. You don't see curvy bodies and small boobs of a traditional Brazilian women. My favorite part of my research was learning about Brazil's beauty culture in past decades. It surprised me how much it has changed. In past generations like the 1950's it was ideal to have curvy hips and not be thin. It showed wealth and that you had the money to buy food. I wish today's society was like this in the sense that its ok to have curvy hips and a bit of fat on your body. Today, women are so focused on being skinny. The one thing that stood out about my research was how open Brazil is about plastic surgery. In Canada, I feel that plastic surgery is something that is still not fully excepted and is not something that is openly talked about. When someone gets cosmetic surgery in Canada it's usually kept under wraps. Living in Brazil for women can be exceptionally hard. Being surrounded by plastic surgery and the need to look perfect can be draining. Women who don't have the ideal body may feel self continuous and insecure in Brazil. I hope that Brazil's beauty culture will change and move to a more natural approach. Plastic surgery can be good in some situations, but the way that Brazil emphasizes it isn't good. Plastic surgery shouldn't be something that is needed. Every women should feel beautiful in their own body they were born with.
