2. Fugitive slaves could not testify in court.
3. Slaves were returned to their masters down south.

Most African Americans in the south were slaves but about 6% were free. Even though they were free they still had many disadvantages. They could not vote, send their children to school, testify against a white person, serve on juries, etc..

An increased demand of cotton gave the South an economic boost. The enslaved african americans harvested and did all the work in the cotton fields. Slaves lives were controlled by their owners. Many, after being sold, would never see their family again. Many slaves tried to escape and run away but most of the time their owners punished them greatly when they were caught.
