The Banana Project aims to increase access to nutritious food sources for the Zambia community by starting a banana farm. Having bananas available steadily throughout the year can decrease malnutrition and hunger rates across Zambia and lower the risk of related diseases or illnesses, therefore leading to decreased morbidity rates throughout the population.

Sustainable Human Development - THE BANANA PROJECT

Through Oxfams ongoing project 'The Banana Project' in Zambia, more people have been able to be trained to work for the farm and earn an income, increasing the gross national income, positively impacting the decent standard of living dimension of human development. With increased income, more people in Zambia are able to afford nutritious foods, potentially decreasing the risk of disease and illness (eg. malnutrition), positively impacting physical health. With increased physical health, more people in Zambia are able to be trained to work for the banana farm and therefore increase economic growth, positively impacting economic sustainability. With increased economic sustainability, more parents are able to send their children to school, potentially increasing the mean years of schooling in Zambia where they may be able to learn important things (eg. good hygiene),

positively impacting the education dimension of human development. With increased education, children are able to speak to more people and make new friends at school, increasing friendship networks, positively impacting social health. With increased social health, more people are able to pass on information to current and future generations (e.g good hygiene), positively impacting social sustainability. Overall, the construction of the Banana Project by Oxfam provides the Zambian population with the skills, and resources to ensure they can reach their full potential and lead productive lives in accordance with their needs and interests, positively impacting sustainable human development.

The Banana Project was implemented to decrease the amount of families who were consuming only one meal each day, with many women in Zambia risking their lives to water crops and feed their children, due to the crocodile infested Zambezi river being their only reliable source of water. A group of 20 women farmers from Zambia, invest their skills, time, and energy to implement a high-value banana crop. The group received essential training and tools from OXFAM, as well as an irrigation pump, and a solar-powered electric fence to protect their crop, which they could harvest consistently throughout the year. The Banana Project has become extremely successful, providing a steady profit and allowing families to be fed, and children to be educated.

Appropriate- The Oxfam banana project is appropriate as many women in Zambia were risking their lives to produce water crops to earn an income and were struggling to provide one meal a day for their families. The banana project focused on involving the local people by providing women with essential training that allows the community to harvest high value banana's all year round and earn an income to provide for their family.

Affordable- The Oxfam banana project is affordable as Oxfam supporters have supplied the essential training, tools, an irrigation pump and a solar-powered electric fence to protect the crop all year round. The implementation of the banana project has supported the farm and has allowed locals to establish a profitable banana farm, earning 2000 kwacha per tonne that goes towards feeding and sending their children to school.
