The Relationship between the tree and the family represents how difficult change is. Regardless of the pressure caused by the mortgage, the family keeps the tree because it reminds them of their husband/father. They refuse change even when reality cracks at them like a "whip".

The relationship of the tree to the family serves as a an item that seems as an item passed down from their previous heritage. it is probably for a rememberance of their older ancestors; and would be rude to sell it and pay the mortgage with it.

The relationship between the family and the tree is sentimental. In the beginning, the speaker and the mother wanted to get rid of the tree, but at the end, they soon realize that if they get rid of it, the father will be disappointed. I am assuming that the father has passed because he was never present with the two characters in the poem. So, out of guilt and emptiness, the mother and speaker decide to keep the tree despite the great reasons to get rid of it.

the relationship between the tree and the family is an addiction. The Black Walnut tree is an extended metaphor to addiction. the family is suffering from something like smoking. they know how awful it is for their health, yet they do nothing because they are afraid of the emptiness they would feel. they leave it for another year, and things get worse, but still they do nothing because they fear the recovery state.
