Youtube is the most popular with 95% of these social media users, followed by Facebook with 90%. In Italy - my duty station, 35,9 million people use Facebook, followed by Instagram 28,8 million. Third position WhatsApp in Brazil and LinkedIn in Italy. Brazil has a population of 213.318 million people in 2021 and Italy of 60.462 in 2020.
Social network sites have changed the number of sustainable connections with other people and the perception that it is plausible to relate with large numbers of people. The practice of socializing through social media constitutes a relatively new practice. Still, such practices also influence our representations of society itself and how social relations are built, interrupted, fostered, and socially appropriated for individual or collective autonomy.

Similarly, several ministers and political leaders and even the church, which wields a lot of influence in the country uses FB to relay its news and messages.

To my mind, one of the key reasons why FB became so popular was because in the early days of the internet in the country, some service providers offered free FB packages/social media packs.

However, TikTok and Instagram have gained currency in the recent times.

A lot of Indonesians enjoy YouTube because it provides all types of videos, from entertainment, how to, to news. WhatsApp is mostly used as a way to communicate with others (family and friends), and its platform makes it easier to share news and images (and sadly, also infodemic). Facebook has been around for ages, and although many of its users have left the platform or temporarily deactivate their accounts, they then move to Instagram (which is also owned by Facebook). Instagram has become a part of people’s daily life as they offer ways to express yourself (whether through InstaStory, Insta post, and Insta video/reel), follow and engage with celebrities and influencers, and shop their favourite brands.

Facebook remains top of the list in West Africa. It is the social media with the highest presence, and it is easy to build a following on it and gain visibility. Twitter is also much used, but rather for professional purposes, as I mention above. Youtube is a platform we use, but clearly not enough, as I learned from the statistics of this module. However, Youtube being exclusively a video platform, one needs video producing capacity to create a constant stream of content.
