Japan had imperial ambitions to expand to China to solve some demographical and economical problems and to take over the Chinese import market. When in 1937 Japan decided to declare war on China, America was very against this aggression and responded with trade embargoes and economic sanctions. Specifically, the oil embargo that America organized with the British and the Dutch was a thorn in the side for Japan, which imported 90% of its oil. Without oil Japan’s military could not function and all war efforts would come to an end.

Japan’s only chance was the element of surprise and to destroy America’s navy as quickly as possible. Japan wanted to move into the Dutch East Indies and Malaya to conquer territories that could provide important natural resources such as oil and rubber. By destroying a large portion of the American fleet, they hoped to conquer the Philippines and Malaya while America was still recovering from its own damages.

America pigeonholed Japan into a similar fascist system like Nazi Germany then ravaging Europe. "They thought the Japanese were just like the Nazis, in that they were unified behind a philosophy, a madman dictator, and the unstoppable force of fascism," says Nelson. "They weren't... the Japanese government was so chaotic that it changed hands 15 times in 14 years." Because of this constant turn-over, there were moments in the lead-up to war that the United States could have negotiated a peace with an incoming government, most notably with Japan's last civilian prime minister. America's misunderstanding of Japan's political turmoil eventually led to war.

We think our project went very well overall. The students participated in the interactive and followed along with the notes. The clues found in the first interactive reinforced what people probably already knew regarding Pearl Harbor. The documents at the end of the lesson introduced a new theory and perspective on Pearl Harbor that they may not have considered before. The only thing that may have went wrong was that we went a little over on time due to the amount of clues in our interactive. However, it seemed like students enjoyed the lesson and we all worked cooperatively to make the project happen.
