I think this because all she wanted was to be able find her identity and be independent. Independence and freedom are things that I value and think everybody should have. "The things that haven’t been done before, Those are the things to try; Columbus dreamed of an unknown shore, At the rim of the far-flung sky" (1-4). This relates to Beneatha because Beneatha wanted to try many different and new things, many of which you wouldn't expect for someone like her. "The many will follow the beaten track, With guideposts on the way, They live and have lived for ages back With a chart for every day. Someone has told them it’s safe to go, On the road he has traveled o’er," (9-14). This relates to the story because the Youngers want Beneatha to get married to George so they can become rich, letting them take an easy route, rather than letting Beneatha take time to find herself and try different things.  A few strike out, without map or chart, Where never a man has been, From the beaten paths they draw apart, To see what no man has seen" (17-20). This relates to Beneatha wanting to find herself and be independent and wanting to try and experience different things. This causes her to often be at odds with her family, which causes her to sometimes feel lost.

This also relates to Beneatha wanting to be different and find herself. This causes Beneatha to be different from her family, who don't do the same thing and usually stay in their comfort zone, and take the easy route.

A quote that supports this in on page 50, when Beneatha says “…But first I’m going to be a doctor, and George, for one, still thinks that’s pretty funny. I couldn’t be bothered with that. I’m going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!”. This supports the theme because is shows that Beneatha is somebody who is set on pursuing their dreams and ambitions, which is to become a doctor. Being a doctor was a very unusual profession for women in the 1950s, which is why her family was against it. It would also cause her a lot of struggles, and it would be easier to simply marry George so she and her family could become rich. However, Beneatha doesn't care about what her family wants for her, and simply wants to be allowed to follow her dreams.
