"Since I Learned How To Walk" is a documentary short film coming in at 3 minutes 8 seconds. It is narrated by Alysson Paradis and she talks about the game of football as more than just a hobby, it's an experience, it's life. It is essentially a cinematic montage of clips that show a football team in training and matches. The shots range from close up action shots of footballs to mid shots of the women in the team and some shots have a slow motion effect.

This short film communicates what football means to the women who play it. From the title, "Since I Learned How To Walk" It immediately instils an image of belonging, this is something that has been a part of these women's life since childhood. There is ambient music that increases the sentiment of it all and the use of slow motion shots creates a nostalgic atmosphere. The narration describes football as a "dance for 11 people", this shows that it is more than a sport to these women, it's like art and it's beautiful. The mid shots of the women and the candid shots of the team physically portray the joy you get from playing as they are all smiling and laughing. During the shots of the football match, the narrator describes the atmosphere and adrenaline of playing which is complimented by the handheld, fast paced camera movement in these shots.

The way the narration is written, although spoken in first person can be applied to all the women in the film as the film portrays football as a shared experience and is relatable to all those who play football which I know as a football player myself.

I think this documentary short is successful in it's approach as it does a good job in creating a sentimental atmosphere and it does well in provoking emotions from viewers. The shots are beautifully cinematic with a bit of edge, created through the editing style. I enjoy the narration as it compliments the visuals well. It is easy for viewers to take in what is being said while appreciating the shots due to the audio levels being balanced and of a good quality. The film closely follows the conventions of documentary from the voice over which guides the audience through the watching experience and clearly speaks the message, hand held camera shots which encodes realism, the use of establishing and close up shots, to a clear and linear narrative, keeping it revolved around one main topic.

This text particularly inspired me. I would like to create a similar atmosphere in my own work and take influence from the shots used, specifically those of the women training and playing in the match. I have learnt from the text that low angle shots are effective in giving power to the women playing and portraying the feeling of adrenaline when on the pitch. I want my documentary short to be inspiring on some level and I intend to do this by ending with a message of hope for the future of women's football. Contrary to the narration in "Since I Learned How To Walk", I will be interviewing the coach and manager of the football club which will be my main focus of the short however, I will implement the way this film had clips playing over the voice in order to keep the audience captivated. Overall, this documentary has given me an insight on how to convey the meaning behind football and show the passion I have for the sport.
