My Explanation
This is where Lago planted the seed of doubt when he first tells Roderigo that Desdemona is cheating on Othello with Cassio. He tricks Roderigo into getting into a fight with Cassio because Roderigo thinks that it will benefit Othello when Lago knows that it will bring down Othello.

My Explanation
Lago goes to Brabantio to tell him that Othello is sleeping with Desdemona in the hopes of Brabantio attempting to break up the relationship. In the end, Brabantio allows his daughter to make her own life decisions which is not what Lago wanted.
