There was this one time where I was at uni, and I met up with one of my friends. She looked sad, so I asked her how she was doing and if she was okay. Turns out she just got a bad mark on her assignment. I understood what she was feeling because if I was in her position, I would be sad too. So I listened to her story, and I made her feel like she was heard. We went out for a bubble tea date afterwards to boost her spirit up.

Last semester, i took an internship in a start-up company which is known for their fast-paced environment. In the end of my internship, i was chatted by my junior. She asked me lots of things about her jobdesk for the internship. I taught her patiently because i know she has to learn as soon as possible. If not, she will face difficulties to adapt in that company.

One time, one of my friend in uni invited me for a sudden dinner session. As I was not busy that night, I decided to go ahead. In this unusual dinner session, he suddenly broke into tears and anger of how he felt hurt by a broken friendship (he had a problem with one of his best friends) and how overwhelmed he was with keeping up with his studies. As a good friend, I decided to give an ear to his story and become a unjudgmental listener to whatever he had to say. I advised him to move on and try to find new friends in replacement to the problem so that he can fight this problem without hesitant. I think it is important to really have an ear for people really in need of a listener during such difficult times.

We muat both feel what other people feel, whether they are our friends or not. When we feel each other's feelings, our emphaty and sympathy will increase. This empathy and sympathy will further shape us to respect others. We have to care about others, like others are our friends. Treat them like how if you are in their position! ❤️

Being a listener is not my forte, but as time goes by, I learn and understand that there are times that I wish someone would listen and being empathic with me instead of giving advice or finding my mistakes. Often the person itself knows what is their weakness / mistake, moreover how to overcome it, but they are just heart broken emotionally and need someone to listen and be with them at the moment - have a feeling that someone else understand and have experienced the same thing. That they are not alone. Certainly, after being bullied, or broken hearted, or hurt by either other people or self-made mistake, it will be easier to condone / console oneself if he/she have someone that empathy with him/her.

A few years ago one of my closest friends lost their dream job as a chef. After getting fired, they would always tell me they "weren't enjoying it [the job] that much anyway." So I remember I saw that as an opportunity to make jokes about it. Sought of as a crude way to cheer someone up and get them thinking about other things other than the chef job.

Well, instead of cheering them up, my close friend broke down into tears... I remember that moment well because suddenly I understood that they were just saying things like that as a sort of defence mechanism against the negative emotions of losing a dream job. At that moment I realise that to be a good friend, sometimes you are required to sit down and truly listen when someone is hurting, not try to offer solutions or joke around right away, but rather be empathic and understand their pain. To show that you care.

There were times when my friends feel sad and not motivated to do things, I myself positioned myself as someone to support them emotionally and to get their back. In my case, I always try to imagine being in their situation, so I can understand fully what they're facing with. Then, I would decide to give them a comfort first (either with hugs or pats, give them some water to calm down, etc.) then the solutions for the last.

This is not applicable all the time though, because I'm personally busy with college, and sometimes my friends come to me at the time I'm occupied with stuffs. But, I always make sure to tell them that I'll chat them or call them later, after I'm done with my stuff, and I really do as what I said to them.

empathy is a beautiful way to support others. we listen to them, we feel what they going through, we support them, sometimes we give them solutions because most of them just want to be heared. also frequently we found ourselves are not perfect enough to be a listener but that's okay because we have to be patient and softly give them some understanding.
