- And she would never be so confident about her going out as she now is.
- i think people learns to adapt to different environments. It is one of their nature. So she chose to leave for a better future though it was hard for her but somewhere she was also sure that she will be able to adapt to the culture.
- But leaving the place where you have been all your life, and suddenly step into the world which is completely different from yours, it has great emotional impact on your identity. it is really hard and overwhelming.
- I really liked the quote about mixing up the indian rhythm and english lyrics, because it concludes the whole chapter that how she went through the transition and made a balance in it.
- Every one of us look for faults when we want to take a new decision because we want to be safe and do not want to regret later.
- I think the identity people get after they are born from their culture and family is the very first and foremost identity that he/she conceives. and then they go out and learns to adapt to the new environment but one part of that person keeps taking him/her back to his own very first identity. and this is what Alvord did. She moved on but taking her first identity with her and made a balance in those two environments.

She misses her traditions and it was hard for her to let go of them. Yes she could have stayed home and stayed in her comfort zone but she wanted more for herself. She wanted to push herself to be better and be able to do whatever she wanted. And in order to do that, you have no choice but to take risks.

- She wanted to show her family what she can do. She did not get any warnings about what was to come since no one really got a college education in her family.

- Because of her family believing in her, she would not have the identity she had when she first moved to Dartmouth. Your identity reflects on who raises you and what you learn from your surroundings. Her parents believed that she can make a difference and this gave her strength.

- Alvord's identity consisted of strength and responsibility after her experience. Connecting to all of our lives, letting go of something whether you want to or not can be a very sad and hurtful thing. Changing all of your routine can be a very confusing time for everyone. You would be lost. Since she felt like she lost her culture and her traditions, this made her stronger and it finally made her open up to other people.

- I did like her end result of her identity in the story. When everyone was singing together, I think this made her feel a sense of comfort and safety which she has not felt since she was on the reservation.

-

-It was her choice to leave and get an education, especially wanting to become a surgeon. She knew it was going to be a long hard road to get to her dream.
- I think that her coming from a place that are not advanced at all. They have tribes and religion. They also have different routines in their daily life. Going to college was a totally different experience. I don't think this article was dramatic because EVERYTHING changed. Her eating habits, they way she sleeps, where she sleeps, time difference. However, as time went on, she did find her people in school, she did adjust to the new environment, and she did become a surgeon at the end. So no matter how different her reservoir was from dartmouth, she still achieve her goal at the end. Collage just one of the hard parts that she had to figure out and she did.

She was worried about loosing her Native American identity by going to Dartmouth since it was a new environment for her. In the end she didn't loose any of her identity, instead she gained a new one based on her Native identity mixed with modern America.

- Letting go of her culture and religion is hard for her especially when it is something you grew up with and are surrounded with that type of environment. When she left for Darmouth she decided to go out of her comfort zone and took that risk.
- when we look at the choices she made, we are led to think what she decided to do is not as scary as she decribed. The place she grew up in was not ordinary for people to leave to get a education. The time when this happened, the place and culture she is from can effect how someone feels. It is different for everyone. Everyone is different and something that might not be hard and a big deal for you it may be to someone else.
- The way she lived before was way different than Darmouth. I feel she could have been a bit open minded about how people acted and the way they lived their life. When going to a new place I feel like being open to everything around you helps adjusting to the new lifestyle. I think if she did that she would have not stuggled as much even though things were competely different.

Many cultures are not as open and when people from these cultures encounter people of American culture they view us as rude and loud. When the author faced the outside world she was not
-

I think the reason why we feel as though this passage was dramatic is because the author had such a major culture shock and the number of overwhelming decisions and emotions she had to endure before her transformation in college. I think her feelings are justified because she only grew up in own area and has only ever known her own tribe and traditions.

The reason why she left was because she wanted to get out of her comfort zone and wanted more for herself and a further education that she knew she could not have had in her reservation.

I agree that setting and context is important to keep in mind when reading Alvord's story. Growing up sort of sheltered from the world, and taught strong community values, the move to college resulted in a lot of change. I think she seemed dramatic in the article because she was in a lot of shock: the racism (educating savages), college parties, and classes had overwhelmed her. It was a difficult time in her life, but she eventually found herself in a group of other Native American students. Through them and the other hardships, she learned to appreciate her own culture more that she might've if she had lived on a reservation her whole life.

If you've moved and gone back to your childhood home, you can be overcome with a wave of nostalgia that comforts you and reminds you of who you are because moving is a big thing, especially moving by yourself. You can lose a sense of who you are but finding a connection to your roots can maybe help you to become comfortable to that place.

She was extremely courageous to leave her reservation life; for the first 18 years of her life, she lived isolated from the "real world". Obviously, it would be very tough to adjust to the real world. In the end, however, she managed to graduate and pursue a career as a surgeon. The obstacles she has overcome make an inspiring story to hear.
