The sword given to Beowulf by Unferth, was rare and ancient. It was named Hrunting, and had been used multiple times before in battle. This sword destined any man to win his battle. After Hrunting had failed him, he spotted a large sword in the cave. It was older, from the times of the giants. Beowulf believed this would guarantee his success in fighting Grendel's Mother. The two swords compliment each other, as it shows one completing what the other could not. Which was killing Grendel's Mother. (SB)

The battle of Beowulf vs Grendel's Mother shows the contrast between good and evil because Beowulf states during the battle that he has "God Almighty" by his side. As for Grendel's Mother, she is a giant, she is an ancestor of Cain who was kicked out of the Garden of Eden. She is inherently evil.

The sword that Beowulf will use in order to kill Grendel's mother is used as an example of personification. He speaks of the sword as if the sword itself has feeling and the ability to slay without help of a person. This can be seen in lines 1570-1590. (EC)

"The decorated blade came down ringing and singing on her head" - (1520 - 1523) The sword is said to be singing. (AD)
