Within The Odyssey, the character of Odysseus is portrayed as an epic hero. This can be seen in a few major details such as his noble status and what we see here, his journey. Odysseus repeats that his journey was long and treacherous which is one of the telltale signs of an epic-style hero.

The original text describes Odysseus's journey, but the graphic novel really shows the distress and pain he feels when telling his tale.

The arrow struck Antinous in the throat, and the point went clean through his neck,"

Excerpt 3, Page 1

This makes the climax feel more suspenseful and gives it tension.

The graphic novel gives us a more comprehensive version of the passage by making the climax come more suddenly than slowly.

The passage almost shows this event from the perspective of Odysseus guiding us through every thought.

"Nevertheless, Euryclea, take his bed outside the bed chamber that he himself built. Bring the bed outside this room, and put bedding upon it with fleeces, good coverlets, and blankets' She said this to try him, but Odysseus was very angry said... 'There is no man living, however strong and in his prime, who could move it from its place, for it is a marvelous curiosity which I made with my very own hands... So you see I know all about it, and I desire to learn whether it is still there, or whether any one has been removing it by cutting down the olive tree at its roots.' When she heard the sure proofs Odysseus now gave her, she fairly broke down."

Excerpt 2, Page 2

The original passage does a very good job of portraying tension in this scene, the way it is described as Penelope 'trying' Odysseus and how it describes her breaking down after it is revealed that it is actually Odysseus makes the whole thing seem melancholy.

The graphic novel almost sweeps over most of these details and makes it all happen so quickly which, while easier to understand for the reader, the original does a far better job of painting a picture of the scene and the tension.

Comparing the graphic novel to the original passage, the graphic novel is easier to understand, but the original passage was far better at showing the small details in certain scenes by describing everything it possibly could.

The original passage has many great examples of drawing out scenes to build tension, the best being the climax where the scene is slowed down and shown from the perspective of Odysseus. This makes everything seem tense and dark. Other moments within the original text are much more suspenseful due to the vivid writing.

The graphic novel on the other hand does a better job of decoding what the original text is not clear on, such as certain emotions in characters that aren't written in the scene. As well as allowing us to literally see the bigger picture from what the original text depicts. A good example of this is the section of the story where he tells his tale after escaping Calypso's island. While the scene is condensed the emotions of Odysseus throughout the sequence are far more clear and allow for the reader to have a quick, easy understanding of what is transpiring.
