Self practice self-reflection (SP/SR) has many values for the clinician. Not least of which is an understanding of what it is like to be asked to complete the treatments that we conduct with our clients.

This week is all about your response to completing BA with the sheets given. I would like you to reflect upon your experiences by answering the questions in Box 2. Post your responses anywhere on the padlet.

1. How did you feel about being asked to do this?
I didn't mind being asked to do this as I learn in a practical way so find it helpful
2. How easy was it to complete this?
I found this relatively easy to complete as I could remember what I have done recently and know my own values
3. Were there any barriers to completing this?
I found at times it was difficult to remember the achievement/enjoyment/closenss and importance of the activities i had completed
4. Was was the effect on you of completing this?
I don't think that completing these sheets had an effect on me really?
5. What do your responses mean for the treatment of adolescents with this model? My responses mean that adolescents would be able to reflect on activities they have completed and things they therefore want to complete, it may help them work towards goals (however it hasn't helped me work towards goals as I already have a plan for my week)

1. How did you feel about being asked to do this? - Thought it would be interesting to try the treatment on myself as I didn't know much about it before Tuesdays lecture.
2. How easy was it to complete this? - I found it easy to complete, however I am able to see how an individual with depression may find it challenging to be motivated to do it.
3. Were there any barriers to completing this? - No particular barriers other than struggling to remember what I'd done over the last few days, and in some cases assigning an appropriate numerical score was hard.
4. What was the effect on you of completing this? - It was good to set some goals to achieve and writing the contract made it clear how to achieve it. It helped highlight areas/people in my life to devote more time to.
5. What do your responses mean for the treatment of adolescents with this model? - When I'd completed it I found it a helpful way of setting achievable goals. If patients also completed it I can see how it would help motivate them and highlight that they had goals and things to achieve and help them to complete them.

1. How did you feel about being asked to do this?
I think self-reflection has value in understanding ourselves and feel it's important to do the things we might ask of others as it builds empathy. However I'm not always comfortable talking about myself in such a way and it felt odd to grade my feelings for each activity.
2. How easy was it to complete this?
In terms of remembering what I've been doing for the last two days this was straightforward. Grading the activities took more consideration and I worried a little that I might be somehow under grading the closeness column.
3. Were there any barriers to completing this?
Only in having to think back more than two days. I might suggest to anyone asked to complete this regularly that they might want to keep a note book about what they've done during the week.
4. What was the effect on you of completing this?
I felt patronised (and a bit embarrassed at how dull my life might look) and now struggling a little trying to work out why that was.
5. What do your responses mean for the treatment of adolescents with this model?
Adolescents vary hugely in their experience and outlook. It is difficult to design models of treatment to fit all but I imagine especially so for young people aged between 14-18. Treatments therefore have to adapt to individuals and the times within which they live to be relevant and effective. Collaborative research seems like a good answer.

1. I was interested to find out how BA is practically demonstrated as I had not heard of the treatment before the seminar. I was also interested to see what behaviours I rated as higher in closeness as that is not something I generally consider.
2. I found it fairly easy to complete, although struggled with how to define whether something was important or not to me. For example, doing UNI work is important for my degree but not important for building my relationships.
3. Occassionally struggled to remember what I had done and found some ehaviours harder to rate than others.
4. It was useful to identify specific goals that I could realistically achieve and it was interesting to see which activities I felt closer to others doing and which I felt less close.
5. I can understand how visually laying out day-to-day activities helps patients realise what is more important to them and helps reduce the fear of tackling depression by setting realistic goals with the continued support of the therapist.

2. It was not particularly difficult, however I sometimes did not know how much to include in the diary. The values sheet definitely required more thought and effort.
3. The main barrier was finding time to sit down and reflect. Found it difficult to give a numerical value as this sometimes seemed meaningless and arbitrary.
4. I found it useful to reflect on the diary and values sheet as it's useful to have it on paper. It also highlighted things that I enjoy that I don't do enough of.
5. I think it can be useful for adolescents to be objective on components of their lives. However, I feel that this can become impersonal and cold and does not build on the therapeutic relationship.

I was especially interested as prior to the seminar I didn't know much at all about BA
2. How easy was it to complete this?
I found it a little bit difficult to remember to fill in my activities/ remember what I has done and how they consequently made me feel
3. Were there any barriers to completing this? Remembering what I had done could be quite tricky. I also found the contract quite hard to complete because most of my goals required me to be proactive but I understand that for a child that is more reliant on their parents etc this could be quite useful.
4. Was was the effect on you of completing this?
I found that it gave me a better understanding of BA.
5. What do your responses mean for the treatment of adolescents with this model? I think it would be really engaging for an adolescent to identify their areas of interest and goals. This might make the individual feel that the treatment is tailored to them.

I felt okay about being asked to do this, I didn't know much about BA but it was a good way to learn.
2/3 The tasks were easy to understand and in a simple format. However I found it quite difficult to complete and found myself to be quite reluctant to do it. I didn't like completing the sheets and felt a disconnect between the clinical style of the sheets and real-life.
4. It gave me a better understanding of BA but I can't say it had much effect otherwise.
5. I think it would be useful for some, for others not. Setting goals and then not being able to achieve them may lead to adolescents feeling worse. I think older adolescents may find it a bit patronizing. I would argue CBT is better.

1. How did you feel about being asked to do this? I was happy to complete the task as I really appreciate the importance of understanding the tasks you are providing to young people to try and help them. However, it did make me think about the efficacy of simply recording feelings - perhaps it is really that such a task only has benefit for the age it targets which is a good thing.
2. How easy was it to complete this? The task itself it relatively easy, however I can imagine that for a young person with depression is may be difficult to think of a number of events in the day they see as something they want to record.
3. Were there any barriers to completing this? I think the only real barrier was remembering to complete the task. When it was not my focus I would forget I needed to complete the sheets and then have to do them retrospectively.
4. What was the effect on you of completing this? I think the task did not have an effect on my mood, however it did help me to appreciate what the experience of completing these tasks might be on a young person.
5. What do you responses mean for the treatment of adolescents with this model? I think the artificial nature of my responses in that I am not seeking treatment probably don't give that much meaning for treatment of adolescents.

1) I knew it was important to do in order to fully understand the process young people would go through, but felt a bit uncomfortable going into it as I find reflection hard
2) 'Importance' is a bit subjective
3) Sometimes hard to remember to complete which meant I was sometimes relying on retrospect, which was hard
4) Found that although I'm doing important activities (e.g. academic things) I'm not doing many 'enjoyment' things. Figured maybe I am neglecting some activities which used to reduce stress (e.g. sketching), so maybe I should find more time for these to achieve a balance. I can see how this realisation may be important for those in therapy
5) I imagine it can be potentially helpful as it provides a visual and clearly organised representation of the areas that may be maintaining depression and helps them consider ways to lift mood (through enjoyable activities). However, it may be hard for depressed individuals to incorporate these activities initially due to the nature of depression

Were there any barriers to completing this?
I did feel some resistance to completing this as I do not agree with all of the concepts and what is being inferred within the forms i.e. being on ones own is being construed as a negative thing with a score of 0. This form seems to have activated my inner existential philosopher. Surely finding comfort in being by oneself is important to then be able to appreciate the company of others without feeling a dependance on others to find comfort? But then, maybe im just tired and disagreeable this week.

4. What was the effect on you of completing this? thought-provoking!

5. What do your responses mean for the treatment of adolescents with this model?
They mean that these forms and this model are probably easy enough to complete for adolescents, however, the forms may provoke some deeper awarenesses to arise and therefore treatment needs to be able to give space for these to be heard. However, I'm not sure BA is the appropriate model for this?

Hence proving to be a good intervention. It is also possible that focusing on the time spent on activities that did not make them happy might lead to negative reflection.

Difficult - I kept forgetting, additionally I find the 'closeness' measure difficult determine - I feel this would be even harder for a child
3. Forgetfulness - both forgetting to do it and forgetting what I've done. Also I had lots of other work which needed to be prioritised (e.g. deadlines coming up, dissertation.)
4. Just stressed me out by having something else to do - can't think of any positive effects on mood
5. I reckon it depends on the adolescents, for some having school homework as already too much and they would struggle to be motivated and stress about doing this too.

1. I was happy to do this task and thought it was a very practical way of understanding what the BA entails. Also, I haven’t done many self-reflecting tasks/activities so this was a unique experience for me.

2. It was very difficult remembering to write down and rate each activity straight after each event, meaning I would be writing/rating most of them at the end of the day (and doing it this way was difficult to remember all events I did that day). In addition, some events were harder to rank than others. I also struggled to think of a reasonable contract to stick to.

3. The only significant barrier was remembering to write down each event. Sometimes I didn’t have my sheet with me to write down the event, meaning I would have to remember later in the day to write down and rate the event.

4. It helped me to reflect on what actually gave me enjoyment throughout the day and has helped given me some insight on how to have more enjoyable experiences going forward.

5. I think it can be useful for many adolescents, particularly those who don’t spend much time self-reflecting on their feelings and emotions towards day-to-day events. However, it does require effort from the adolescents to actually take time out of their day to do the BA.

1. How did you feel about being asked to do this? I thought it would be quite helpful as I have been feeling stressed recently, and from what we've been learning I thought it may help me feel more calm.
2. How easy was it to complete this? Some days it was easier than others due to time issues i.e. not having enough time meant that I was a bit annoyed about having to complete it, whereas sometimes I really enjoyed reflecting on my day.
3. Were there any barriers to completing this? I had some issues with time and also just forgetting to do it sometimes.
4. What was the effect on you of completing this? It was good to set goals and even better when these were achieved.
5. What do your responses mean for the treatment of adolescents with this model? It demonstrated that setting realistic goals and achieving them could improve mood and motivate me to do more so this is an indication that it could work for adolescents who struggle.

1) I felt happy to complete this task as I found it helpful to work through the worksheets in order to better understand them.
2) I felt like these tasks were relatively easy to complete as I enjoyed thinking about my day, however, rating my achievements felt somewhat disheartening on days where I should have completed more uni work. Also, it was a challenger to identify specific ways to achieve my goals.
3) It was difficult to complete this due to other tasks that I needed to focus on eg dissertation work and thought paper
4) I enjoyed thinking about my goals and finding ways to achieve these, when did this it made me feel successful. I have noticed that during the week I am far more focussed on uni work which is less enjoyable but I get a greater sense of achievement compared to weekend days where I prioritise enjoyment focussed activities more.
5) I think this would be a helpful treatment for adolescents to determine what their goals/values are and help them to plan to strive for these. I also think this may be a challenge for certain individuals if they feel like this is too much to juggle eg with school work.

1. It felt a bit stressful condensing 8-10 sessions of BA into 3 days, especially because I really wanted to do it correctly in order to fully understand the pros and cons
2. I think it was pretty easy to complete this because I have a planner and update it everyday so whenever I did that, I logged in my activities for the day.
3. Sometimes its hard to keep up with everything just because there can be so much going on at once. Also, it can feel really cold and mundane when rating activities sometimes.
4. I definitely did realise what affected my mood and generally I think it also made me more aware and grateful of what is going on in my life
5. I think this model has the potential to really help some adolescents. The reason why I think it is limited despite having gotten something good out of the model myself is because I recognise that 1. I actually am interested in this and 2. I already have a planner and am quite goal-oriented. I would imagine that this wouldn't be feasible and effective for all depressed adolescents because it can be quite demanding and can seem pointless (which is further exacerbated by how they already feel)

1. I felt interested to do this task as I think that actually doing what children going through sessions of BA would do was a good way to learn about BA.
2. I found this fairly easy to complete as recently have been trying to give myself more structure and have been planning my weeks more therefore had set things every day that I had done.
3. I struggled on a couple of days to remember what I'd done in the evening as forgot to fill out the activities sheet each day so did it all at the end. Also for some activities I struggled to assign them a closeness rating.
4. I've realised that this week I've done what i wanted to do in terms of having productive days, which may not include the most enjoyable activities, but then i've used my evenings to do what i enjoy more.
5. Although I found this easy to complete I can imagine that adolescents suffering with depression or anxiety may find it a lot harder as perhaps they haven't achieved what they feel they should have and it could feel quite demoralising. However if they do successfully complete it I can see how it would be useful for them to help them understand what activities they enjoy and improve their mood and therefore they should do more.

I think it can be useful for people struggling to reflect objectively and take themselves out of the situation, but it cannot be guaranteed that it'll be completed accurately.

1. Reflecting on everyday tasks is a good way of reliving any particular happy moments. Also, the worksheets provided good information on how patients worked through BA therapy and it was a good learning experience for me.
2. As a person that enjoys looking back at past events and how they affect my future relationships, it tends to bring back joy and it was a great way to evaluate that past events may not always have a negative side to it and there are other ways to appreciate bad events as well as good events.
3. Not really, but rating the events were difficult as bad events require more thought in processing a relevant score.
4. Self-reflecting always helps to make myself happier as I think there could be ways in which some events could be looked at differently and things that could have been done differently.
5. In my opinion, adolescents do not necessarily think about their past and future as much as they do in the present. By having a qualified therapist help with evaluating past events, it will help them to a great extent realize that not all bad events should be looked at negatively.

Ben
