This creates strong opportunities for data professionals to drive innovation in health, renewable energy, and delivering services. Nonetheless, there are challenges as national productivity growth has slowed since the mid-2000s (The Treasury, 2023, p. x), and an ageing population will have an effect on the available labour pool. These pressures may lead to future shortages of data professionals, and a reliance on global talent through immigration.

One of the core elements of the Australian Governments plans for investment in the future is to target education, training and migration to support a productive workforce, and expand labour market opportunities. (The treasury, 2023, p. xvi).

As outlined by the Australian Government (https://www.dataanddigital.gov.au/workforce/current-state), government agencies are experiencing difficulty in attracting employees (mid-high experience level) in the digital and data domains, citing low labour market supply as one of the key factors.

With this is mind, it stands to reason that there is likely to be significant future investment in the education and training of data professionals, alongside investment into the attraction and retention of digital and data employees in the government workforce. Data literacy skills, and those that have the capability to help others develop data literacy skills in the workforce will be highly sought after in the coming decades.
