What areas of your writing have you improved upon? What areas of your writing do you still hope to improve upon? What Paper 1 specific skills do you hope to work on before the AOL?

I have improved on coming up with stronger points for my paper 1 and supporting them with literary devices and analyzing them in full detail. I have also improved on the paper 1 format, which is very new to me since I have only analyzed texts in paragraph and essay formats. I am hoping to work on developing a stronger thesis statement that both zooms in and zooms out of the text. This includes making connections to the bigger idea of the text and how it contributes to bigger issues. I would also like to work on identifying the target audience of the text and incorporating the reader into my analysis. One Paper 1 specific skill I would like to work on is getting more used to the introduction format that is different from an essay. This includes a description of the text, the impact on target audience and a thesis statement.

Character reflection - Stan

This image relates to Stan's perspective on the divide in privilege and power between the higher and lower class at the plant. Stan himself experienced this divide when he injured himself while working, and none of the higher-ups helped him despite being in the position to. This is similar to the catholic Europeans and Canadian police in the image that are acting on the negative judgements they make of people with Indigenous backgrounds. This divide created by the wealthy and the poor can be paralleled by the floor in the plant that divides the higher working class and the lower working class, in which Stan worked in prior to quitting. In the top right corner of the image, three children are seen to be running away from the conflict without choice, akin to Stan, who had no choice but to quit after the mistreatment he faced by wealthier workers and does not wish to act on this injustice because he knows there is no way to eliminate the abuse of power present in the plant.

Over the course of this unit, I had the opportunity to develop skills that were specific to the paper 1 structure. This included learning how to write an introduction and conclusion in the paper 1 style and what to include in the body paragraphs. I developed these skills through completing journal responses for each reading of Sweat by Lynn Nottage, where I analyzed a specific theme present in the extract I chose. I have also completed a practice paper 1 in preparation for the AOL, which aided me in learning how to format an introduction paragraph and the importance of including the impact on the reader or audience. During this unit, I faced two main challenges - adapting to the paper 1 structure and analyzing with visual techniques rather than literary techniques. In order to develop my paper 1 writing skills, I chose multiple artifacts created by Kent Monkman, and practiced writing an analysis on them in the paper 1 format. In order to practice my visual analysis techniques, I analyzed a variety of artifacts, including The Prophecy which I analyzed for my MELONS analysis and discussion with a classmate. In this analysis, I ensured to focus on using a wide range of visual techniques and using them to connect to a broader theme and impact on the audience in order to practice my visual analysis skills. Through reading and analyzing the novel Sweat, I was able to identify the key themes and connect them to real world events and issues, such as racial injustice. Many of the characters, such as Oscar and Cynthia, were part of a minority group and were treated unjustly because of their ethnic background. The same scenario applies to when racist mass texts referring to slavery were sent following the election in the United States, and this is one of the many cases of racial injustice present today. Out of the tasks I completed throughout this unit, the one that sparked my curiosity the most was the MELONS analysis and group discussion I had to complete for “The Prophecy” by Kent Monkman. Analyzing through a discussion was something new to me, so it was interesting to try different methods of analysis. This task was particularly meaningful to me because the painting I analyzed had representation of the social norms surrounding LGBTQ+ community, which is something that is not as common in modern paintings. This brings me to one of the topics that I would choose to further explore - the stereotypes placed on the LGBTQ+ community. Throughout the last three years, the English curriculum has provided many opportunities to dive deeper into the topics of stereotypes surrounding colored people, women and other minority groups. However, we have not had the opportunity to explore the stereotypes placed on the LGBTQ+ community and how these stereotypes affect them, which is why I would love to take a deeper dive into this topic in the future.

Despite popular belief that we are in the fourth wave of feminism, I believe that we are still in the third wave. The feminist movement we see today stands for the same rights as what feminists wanted 3 decades ago - having social justice for women, especially in male-dominated fields. This is an injustice that women still face to this day at the workplace, educational institutions, and other communities. Although it has been many decades since the start of the third movement of feminism and many things have changed within our lives, using new technology and social campaigns to advocate for feminism does not necessarily lead to a new movement. Our lives are constantly changing and adapting to our changing lives to ensure maximum exposure of feminist movements in our current world. The fourth wave would come in the future when the feminist movements is advocating for a different set of injustices that women are facing.

As a young child, I always had the dream of becoming an astronaut and never doubted it. However, my parents were always discouraging me from being interested in the field of astronomy because of it being predominantly male-dominated. The environment I was brought up in connects to what the artwork curated by the Guerrilla Girls critiques: how women are constantly put into an environment where the positions of power and authority are held by men. This forces women into a situation where they fear attempting to break through the misogynistic system established by the patriarchal system, hindering the progress of feminism. However, through their art, it is revealed that there exist women who are not intimidated by male-dominated fields, specifically the art industry, in which women face constant discrimination and oppression solely due to their gender. As someone who grew up around adults who discouraged me from entering male-dominated fields, such as astronomy and engineering, I struggled with discovering a true passion in my life without having to deal with constant disapproval from my parents. Even though their discouragement was different from the art industry, being out of the concern that I would struggle to achieve success being surrounded by men, both rooted from the same belief that women would have a harder time demonstrating agency and power compared to men. However, over time, I have learned to not allow my gender to influence my passions and interests and, similarly to the Guerrilla Girls, to speak up and freely express myself.

An issue that is resurfacing on the news and social media recently is the case between the young influencer, Piper Rockelle, and her mom. From a young age, Piper would frequently post content on social media platforms, but she was unknowingly targeting an older, male audience. As Piper’s manager, her mom would force her to wear certain clothing and act a certain way in order to appeal to this male audience. Her mom’s belief that these actions would catch the eye of a man reveals how corrupted today’s society is and men’s desire for an innocent yet sexualized woman. This situation is exactly what Angela Carter’s “The Bloody Chamber” is critiquing - society’s unrealistic standards of a woman to meet the male gaze by being pure and sexually appealing at the same time. For instance, in “The Snow Child”, the Count is attracted to the young female character who is pale and stark naked, with an innocent appearance and does not pay attention to the Countess, who is older and fully clothed. The contrast in desire by the Count between the two men is a reflection of the real world, where women are unwanted if they do not appeal to men’s desires. This parallels the Guerilla Girls’ artwork, which critiques how women must be sexually appealing to men in order to make it into the art industry. In reality, those who do not conform to the male gaze are not heard by others and cannot make it far into the art industry, similarly to how Piper’s mom believes that her daughter’s only chance at success on social media is to appeal to a male audience.

In the movie “Mulan”, the main female protagonist breaks gender norms by being a part of the Chinese army and fighting during the war while surrounded by men. It was expected of Mulan to stay at home and take care of her family during the war, but instead, she disguised herself as a man to fight for her homeland and bring honor to her family. Similarly to the female protagonists in “The Bloody Chamber” by Angela Carter, all female characters do not conform to the traditional norms that are placed on women by the patriarchy. For instance, the little girl from “The Werewolf” is expected to be an innocent and weak child, but she reveals herself to be strong and independent by being able to defend herself from the werewolf. Both Mulan and the little girl are expected to follow the path that is established by society for women, but they act out to reveal women can be attributed to other characters, such as agency and independence. Through comparing these two texts, it can be seen that men are not the only ones that can be in positions of power and independence. Society implements the idea of men being superior, discouraging women from speaking up and realizing their full potential. When texts with strong and independent female protagonists are created and shared throughout society, they inspire young women to follow their own path rather than the one decided for them by the patriarchal system.

Throughout this unit, I developed my annotation and analysis skills when reading books full of literary devices and hidden themes. I developed my annotation skills through creating an organized annotation system, where I read through a story multiple times for each type of literary device or element. For instance, when I was annotating “The Werewolf” in preparation for the seminar, I read through multiple times for symbolism, metaphors and similes, tone and mood, and other literary devices. I used this annotation system for each reading that was assigned and was able to annotate more ideas each time. Therefore, by the end of the unit, I had fully annotated pages of “The Werewolf” with a variety of literary devices, allowing me to pull themes and ideas easily from my book and contribute fully when planning out the seminar with my group. This annotation system also helped develop my analysis skills throughout the unit. For example, when writing the Paper 2 assessment at the end of the unit, having annotated in detail prior to writing the essay allowed me to dive further into the quotes that I have chosen and flesh out a more cohesive analysis. On the other hand, there were a few challenges I faced during the unit, specifically regarding presentation skills. Having to present a 10-minute presentation to the class forced me to develop ideas and analyze my selected excerpt on the spot, which was outside of my comfort zone. In order to become more comfortable with presenting on the spot, I practiced analyzing and presenting random quotes throughout “The Werewolf” without any preparation. This forced me to learn to move on, instead of stopping, when I stuttered or ran out of ideas, which ensured that my presentation was as cohesive and fluid as possible. Another challenge I had when presenting was being confident with my body language and tone while projecting my voice to the audience. In order to become more confident with my presentation skills, I practiced presenting with my seminar group, my family and friends. Even if there were times I felt that I was unprepared during these practice presentations, practicing with many people allowed me to adopt a more confident tone when speaking to ensure the audience’s attention and engagement.
