I think it's important to emphasize how we have skills-based standards in ELA. As such, our amazing novel and literature context is important and relevant, but our assessment should focus on student skill development. I guess I'm talking about a teacher having a sense of content pedagogy and not just content or pedagogy.-- Gary

In an elementary classroom, the teacher can spend time getting to know their students and backgrounds. It may be a good idea to send out a beginning of the year survey or questionnaire to learn about their background information. Then, teachers can select mentor texts and create activities that include all cultures and diversities. Something that I do, especially during the holiday season, is I invite parents in to celebrate different holidays. For example, I have had parents come in to assist the students making gingerbread cookies. Other parents have come in to complete a project about Diwali.

For English in particular, we can share information from workshops and faculty meetings the team has attended over the years. For tasks such as RST or Literary Analysis writing, teachers can share practices and materials that have been beneficial to students over the years.
