The year 2020 brought an era of uncertainty, isolation, and imagination. Our understanding of time has become warped under this mass, ever-lengthening quarantine. Hope is something that must be regularly rebuilt. This time period has led to many trends of escapism as the population tries to distract itself from the claustrophobic reality it has found itself trapped within.

The concept of the Kunstkammer follows that of a "cabinet of curiosities." In the 16th century, it was popular among European elite to create personal collections as a symbol of wealth and status. Such collections often showed off naturalia, products of nature, arteficialia, products of man, and scientifica, items that showed man's mastery over nature and the elements.

This exhibition follows a similar theme. Here is a showing of stolen moments in the outside world. There is a sense of pride and ego in the collection that echoes that of the original Kunstkammer. Not in the pieces' physical ownership, but in the victory of sharing some secret sacred memory. To visit an exhibition in the middle of a pandemic is a risk. Hidden behind masks, one wanders through the empty rooms as a cautious ghost in a no longer familiar world. The memories are retold like photographs taken carefully to omit the shadow of someone just out of frame. These objects capture the beauty found in rebellion. This collection is meant to help one step out of reality, just for a moment, and escape in wonder of artifacts time left unforgotten.

Time is an uncertain construct, especially now. It is important not to get detached from this. Just as all of our lives are constricted by time, life during the pandemic remains restricted by choices made for and against the safety of others.
