The Dakota Access Pipeline is a 1,172 mile long pipeline that connects areas rich in oil from North Dakota to Illinois. With this, oil can be transported to refineries to the Gulf Coast. The pipeline was approved in July by the engineers at the US Army Corps. The Standing Sioux protested the pipeline because they believe that it is a threat to their environment and will damage historic sites that are important to the tribe.

The pipeline crosses North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and some private land in Illinois. The pipeline does NOT go across the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. However, the private land it covers is part of the tribes ancestral homeland that was promised to them to the Sioux in the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1851.

Obama Administration vs. Trump

One of president Barack Obama;s last calls of order before leaving office, was rejecting the Dakota Pipeline in 2016. He claimed that it was unnecessary to hurt the credibility of the US by possibly being a "climate crusade."
Once Trump became president, he overturned the order and allowed the Dakota Pipeline to go into construction. The statistics are what accounting for the opposing views of Obama and Trump. Obama cared about the people's views and not causing controversy, but Trump only cared about the profit of the US economy. Once oil started pumping in the pipeline in May 2017, oil production skyrocketed to about 1.2 million barrels a day.

Benefits:
1.) The pipeline will help the economy and create thousands of jobs.
2.) It will overall help the US become more energy efficient.
3.) Most importantly, the transportation of oil will be more environment friendly, safe, and cost efficient.

Drawbacks:
1.) It can be a potential threat to the Sioux tribe's water source.
2.) It is being built on sacred land that was promised to the Sioux in a treaty long ago.
3.) There is a possibility that it can cause a climate change by pumping hundreds of thousands gallins of oil daily.

Issues That Motivated Youth and Social Media Platforms

The issues that motivated the youth were the fact that their drinking water and sacred sites were threatened. Even if they are "safe", there are always accidents and just a little oil spillage can ruin the scared sites for the people of this tribe, even the youngest members.
The youth used their voices the best way they knew how and that was though social media. Using social media to voice your opinions is great, as long as you are not specifically bashing anyone. You'll bring awareness to an issue that many people probably didn't even know existed.
They started a multiple tags to start awareness such as: #noDAPL, #waterislife, and #standwithStandingRock. This is great because theu can use their First Amendment right and freely voice their opinions and hopefully get enough people on board to help make a big motion to stop this.

My Thoughts

I believe that the Dakota Pipeline is a good idea and should remain on track to run. Pipelines are an efficient and safe way to transport crude oil. It has been made clear to not cross any of the Sioux Indian Reservation.
Also, the Dakota Pipeline is not the only pipeline to come about. The Northern Border pipeline has been running under Lake Oahe since 1982. Using the Dakota Pipeline would eliminate the use of up to 740 rail cards transporting oil everyday. Eliminating the use of rail cars would then eliminate pollution that is released into the air by the cars. Its like hitting two birds with one stone.
