Before Richthofen was enlisted in the German Air Service, he was a cavalry man.

After Richthofens transfer from his cavalry regiment he became a backseat observer in a reconnaissance plane. This didn't last long though, because after a few months Richthofen was transferred back to the western front where he earned his pilots license. This is also where he was assigned to the Jasta 2 fighter squadron. With this squad he would earn his first aerial victory on September 17, 1916 and quickly go on to get five more and earn the title of "flying ace". A few months later he would be placed in command of his own squadron full of talented pilots named Jasta 11. This was also around the time that he painted his plane red, which resulted in the allies giving him the name the Red Baron.

On April 21, 1918, the Red Baron was shot in the chest during a dog fight after he dove towards the ground and came under fire from Australian infantry men and Canadian ace, Arthur Roy Brown. He crash landed in a field where he was recovered by allied forces and buried with full military honors. After his death, Richthofen still had a major effect on the world. This effect is linked to legends, books, comic strips, films, and television programs. Even after he was gone he was still being praise as one of the greatest fighters to ever fly the European skies.
