inspired by the 1930s rubber hose cartoons.

Rubber hose style animations was popularised by 'Felix the Cat' featured in the early 1920s.

- Studio MDHR was able to capture this vintage rubber hose style by implementing a grainy overlay. This allows the art to appear aged. The gritty effect adds noise to a photo/ video to make it appear more natural. This allows the result to appear unedited and raw. This helps draw the audience into the reality you are trying to create.

- The art of this poster consists of minimal colours and characters who appear to be captured in the moment. The use of Red makes this poster stand out to the viewer. The artist chooses the main characters from Cuphead as the focus. Allowing its rubber hose style drawing to appeal to the viewer. 

- A closer look at this poster will unveil the subtle dusty and worn effect applied to the image. Since this poster is the front cover of the book 'The art of Cuphead', the artist has captured the vintage look and feel with the touch of aged paper.

Rubber hose
- Some notable users of rubber hose animation is the popular Disney television's Mickey Mouse. The name rubber hose is derived from the arms of the characters. The arms are drawn as rubber hoses.

The rubber hose style cartoon is appealing to me with its vintage look. As a lover of vintage cars, restaurants and clothes, rubber hose suits my style perfectly.

Rubber hose can be described with Vintage, Cartoon, Retro-Futurism. In the mid 1950's this style emerged as a challenge to traditional fine art. Pop art grained popularity in America as well as the United Kingdom. This style is popular amongst the fields of advertisement, comics and mundane mass-produced object.

This Campbell's Soup advertisement is an example of how pop art allows one design to be presented in 6 variations.
The technique used include a play on saturation and tint.

This style appeals to me because of its colours and vibrance. The illustration of the canned soup if highlighted by the vintage cursive 'Campbell's' font. This vintage design is appealing to me and very eye catching to the consumer.

The Campbell's soup pop art style by Andy Warhol displays a vintage, and Cartoon feel. The artwork named 'Saturn Spa' was released in 2017, however, this style of aesthetic was popularised during the 50s ~ 70s. This style is influenced by the uprising of hopes, dreams and inspirations of space travel.

Karen Lynch uses a retro photo as foreground with the distant background always as a futuristic scene/ outer space.

This style appeals to my style since the two themes tie in perfectly with my love for old fashioned life along with every boy's dream of space and beyond.

The style derived from Karen Lynch's artworks can be summarised with Vintage, Retro-Futurism and Outer space. The style of this poster is called Art Deco. Art Deco is a popular design style of the 1920s and '30s characterized especially by sleek geometric or stylised forms.

The components of art deco include
-Smooth wall surface.
-Sharp edged, linear appearance.
-Stylized decorative elements using geometrical forms, zigzags, chevrons.
-Low relief decorative panels.
-Stepped or set back front facade.
-Strips of windows with decorative spandrels.

Art deco first appeared in France just before World War I. Art Deco influenced the design of buildings, furniture, appliances and even jewelry.

This style poster appeals to me because of its simplicity, colours and vintage feel.

The style that symbolised this poster is definitely cartoon and autumn (colour palette). Vintage & Doodle combine to form a style that resembles abstract art. Abstract art plays a big role in intuition and emotion. These complementary forces both have a big effect on the consciousness of post-war societies.

This style appeals to me as the colours are similar to my own colour palette. Moreover, the vintage doodle art simplifies into an abstract yet minimalistic illustration.

The artwork highlights the vintage and cartoon style which aligns with my keywords. My approach to abstracting my logos was mainly to digitalise them. Since the hand-drawn iterations were messy and complicated, tracing the important outlines of each icon made them more minimalistic. Procreate was used to import the original sketches, then using an overlay, the icons were traced and simplified into their basic forms. The retro, yet futuristic collage is captured by the Frida Kahlo portrait painted by Mihaela Pater. Her artwork consists of recreating famous paintings through applying textures that resemble watercolour. However, the personnel within the portraits are always left black and white as it captures human emotions more effectively. Whereas the surrounding environment and even clothing become a vibrant watercoloured painting.

The portrait consists of colours that are represented on my colour palette, similar to that of autumn tones. The head of Frida Kahlo is replaced by my own with a slight twist. 

The glitch pop effect is applied to create a sense of mystery and uncertainty. Symbolising the future and what it will bring to us.

The retro-future collage was complete with the combination of the portrait and the future-glitch face. Furthermore, my passion for Outer space is captured by the planet Saturn and the Celestial map behind it all. The celestial map is a symbol of the ever-expanding universe that we live in. A ceiling for our ever-expanding limit of creativity and the infinite possibilities for creation and discovery.

The order of the layers is an important aspect of this self-map as each layer goes further, not only in time, but the depth of me as a person. The further back the layer, the further into my consciousness you reach.

The choice for the planet Saturn was a symbolic approach to represent the bounding lines and rules that restrain us from the moment we are born. As a designer, I would like to challenge societal norms and reach for the stars.
