School mascot is a panther to honor Black Panthers. Brothers who started Seattle chapter lived in Madrona and had their first free breakfast program there.

The Franklin principle was unreceptive to the BSU's peaceful attempts to discuss the suspensions, so the BSU organized a sit-in with 100 students who stayed marching and demonstrating on school grounds until their demands of reinstatement for the students and an end of racial discrimination in the public schools system were met. The students ended up being reinstated, but three of the UW BSU members who assisted in organizing the sit in were tried and sentenced to 6 months in jail. Instead, they went to the "freedom schools." It lasted 2 days, and they had really high absence rates in schools, as much as 50% in some predominately black schools. There were so many kids participating that they needed extra space, and so used the Mount Zion Baptist Church. It was considered a success by some, and a fail by others.
