Arrow of Time (2016), was created to represent life and death in a cyclical way, contrasting the western thought, which perceives death as the end of life, and time as linear. The work draws from the concept ‘Samsara’ in Buddhism, also known as Metempsychosis which symbolises the eternal nature of life. The concept is portrayed as an installation piece using Counter Gadgets hanging from the ceiling which count from numbers 1 through to 9 during which they are lit up in red, which symbolises life. It then goes dark at 0, meaning ‘death’; the cycle is endless and keeps going. Each counter has a different counting speed reflecting the disparity in the nature of karma (which perpetuates ‘Samsara’) of individuals of different ethnicities, culture, religion and skin colour. The work is presented as though souls are coming down to rebegin their human lives on earth from the universe. Miyajima (Miyajima, 2020) wishes to express the miraculous harmony of life through this piece.
