I´m not sure where to start and my mind is in so many different places as to what I want to research. Therefore, I can be a start. As an individual, I can educate others and inspire them to believe in the same things I do. In my project´s case, I want to show others how important it is to know your worth, how impactful you you can be, and how easily you can make a positive impact on the world.

I am leaning towards the more environmental route, mostly because of the new research I have been finding. I have read recent reports by The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warning us that we have 12 years to protect the Earth from catastrophic changes due to climate change. By 2030, the ocean levels will rise, the ocean will become more acidic, the air quality will be compromised, and of course, the Earth´s temperature will have risen. I want to introduce something doable to my peers. Simply disposing of trash properly has many positive impacts on communities, individuals, animals, the planet, and it is beyond easy. As I teach myself more and more, it’s hard not to become a saddened by the information I come across. These statistics are blowing my mind. Millions of children are dying each year due to the negative affects of pollution, animals are suffering the consequences of humans wrong-doings, and the worst part about it is that it is completely preventable. I read an article that wrote something along the lines of “littering is a side affect of our convinience-oriented society.” I thought this was something worth remembering because of how true it is. Our society becoming convenience-oriented has only brought us temporary solutions to long term problems. Littering is convenient at the time, but now the world is facing huge issues like the plastic island in the Pacific Ocean that has been reported to be 617,800 square miles, according to ABC News in March 2018. For instance, when horrific events take place, such as school shootings, communities come together and society brings up new ways to solve or help this issue. I’m not going to get political with this topic, but people have and continue to come up with temporary solutions in regards to school shootings. There are new inventions like bulletproof backpacks, safe rooms, lock blocks, alarms systems, and much more. Although shootings are tragic and life changing, it is refreshing to see so many people working for solutions while political standpoints are getting into order.

What I mean by this is that if you take a small 20% of your time to focus on something other than school and other than work, it can help keep your life fresh and interesting. When I am in college, I’m going to remember the 20 Time Protect and use this time to do something i’m passionate about. I can either use this time to be outside in nature, to learn something I’ve always wanted to, to learn more about myself, or even take this time to relax and de-stress. Whatever it is I choose to do with my time, I think that it will overall improve my mental health and distract me from the stress I may be facing, even if it’s just 20% of my time.

All my life I have done things to help the environment and the world around me, and now that I have time in school to teach myself more about what I can do, I can continue to do as much as I can to help the planet.
