During the Jin Dynasty, the pipa was played by the people as a way of expressing resentment towards being forced to build the Great Wall of China.
Throughout the history, the pipa is used to play sorrowful songs and poetic lyrics to the instrument.

Erhu is a kind of violin (fiddle) with two strings which, together with zhonghu, gaohu, sihu, etc, belongs to the "huqin" family. It is said that its origin would be dated up to the Tang dynasty (618-907) and related to the instrument, called xiqin originated from a Mongolian tribe Xi.

Compare to Thai music, Erhu is like Saw Daung (Thai violin). When I was young I also played Saw Daung Its sound is quite similar to Erhu.
