These shakers I made are from empty condiments containers filled with dry pasta to create gentle sounds. I covered the containers with light blue construction paper and decorated with Arctic animals such as polar bear and caribou to reflect our northern environment.

I will introduce the shakers to babies during our circle time. Every morning we sing a song using our centre’s instruments. But this time ,I will introduce them the shakers I made and show the Arctic animals on them,I will gently shake it so they can hear the sound. I will let them watch and listen, then slowly move it closer so they explore it with their hands. I will tell them that it is called a shaker and that it is a musical intrument.

I will use this shaker while singing a simple and familiar song like “If You’re Happy and You Know it” I will shake the shaker slowly with the beat of the song and encourage the babies to listen, smile. , and move their bodies. This helps them enjoy music, sounds, and rhythm in a fun and calm way.

~VANISSA

These shakers are made of empty mini juice bottles and dyed pasta inside (red, blue, green). I added simple drawings, praise and reward stickers on the outside to make them appealing and to capture the children’s attention.

I will introduce the shakers during our morning circle time where we normally sing songs and share stories. The shaker will be incorporated while we sing the ullakkut (good morning) song. I will be making enough for all the children in my class so everybody can participate.

Before we proceed singing, I will encourage the children to explore their shakers with me by doing simple movements such as; Shake your shakers up! Shake your shakers down! Shake your shakers side to side! Shake your shakers fast! Shake your shakers slow…slow..slow..! By doing these movements, they already strengthen their listening skills and focused ready to engage in the singing activity.

Freda G.

how I would introduce the shaker to babies, first I would gather the babies onto the carpet, then I would show them the shaker, let each baby have a turn to shake it and observe it, then I would tell them that it is a shaker , what it it make of and that we could use it in songs, ask them if they would like to sing a song with me and use the shaker, a song I would pick would be, shake your shaker, I would use it after each sentence in the lyrics, “shake your shaker in the air” *shake* “shake it high” *shake* “shake it low *shake* and so on until our song is finished and then have each child take turns with the shaker while we sing the same song or a different song. Once we are done, I would plan and make an activity with the babies to have them make their own shaker so they could use one at home and sing songs with their parents/guardians.

Caryn
