John had agreed to meet with his old friends some time after the traumatic event of their friend being crushed to death inside an animatronics metal body, an event that John had witnessed himself. He had watched her body fall limp inside the suit as blood pooled on the ground. Charlie didn't die. Nobody knew how somebody could survive such a gruesome attempt on their life. Charlie did not deny being crushed inside the suit, but it had not been very long since the incident occurred, and Charlie had no evidence on her body that it had happened. No scars, no internal wounds, no damage whatsoever. John refused to believe that the girl who stood before them was their friend. He refuses to see her again, his mind not able to comprehend that she wasn't dead. His friend, worried, gets him to agree to come to a hangout with all their friends there, including Charlie. He goes to the meetup and faces Charlie after so long. He starts to believe that maybe it was her, and time had simply changed her appearance slightly. But as she smiles at him, he realizes something that would immediately put him back on edge. Those weren’t her eyes.

She shakes her fear and reminds herself that she isn't stuck before her mind goes back to John and him subtly testing her to see if she really was Charlie, to which she thinks "who else would i be?"

While on his date with Charlie, she begins to get anxious. She argues with him that she couldn't be his Charlie forever, she describes herself as "A naive little girl who was selfish, scatterbrained, and pathetic." John tells her that he never thought of her like that. She fights back, telling him that he still thinks that. Pressing on, she asks him "If you think im not me, then what am i? Who can you possibly think i am?" John tells her that he had seen her die, and could not believe that it was her who had walked into the diner unscathed the next day. He wanted to believe it, but he had seen her die. She asks him why her telling him that she was alive wasnt enough, and if he wanted to believe her so bad, why didn't he? "Because I'd rather know the truth than believe something just because it would make me happy."

Clay Burke, the Chief of police in their small town, had just been left alone after John came over to tell him about the date he had with Charlie and the weird question she had about if he had seen her aunt recently. He was reading through a missing kid case, the second missing kid case that had both recently occurred, when he heard a noise in the hallway. Before John had left, they both felt a presence watching them. Clay, at the time, had brushed this off as the unease about the clown craze that had overtaken their town. People had been dressing as clowns to eat free at the new clown pizzeria that opened not long before all this. This time, it was different. Clay thought maybe the noise in the hallway could've been John, but after calling out for him and getting no response, he knew otherwise. He grabbed his gun and flicked the safety to off, and stood silently outside the reinforced hallway door. No noise came from the other side for several minutes. But still, he knew there was something in the hallway.

Jessica and John went to Jen's home and shortly after greeting her, there was a knock at the door. Jen urged them to hide in a closet while she answered it and the two ran to different rooms. John opened a closet door and froze. Inside was an animatronic skeleton, twisted with wires and metal. He shut the door and hid with Jessica instead. She hissed at him for not hiding faster and asked him what was wrong. He only said, "It was the machine Charlie's father built to kill himself." It was holding a knife, that's how he knew. They snooped around quietly in the room they were in and heard the person knocking at the front door be greeted in. After they spoke, they realized it was Charlie. John felt something was not right and he began to go through everything in the room. He found nothing out of the ordinary but papers in a chest, a cardboard box of computer parts and different mechanisms, and a second and third box filled with tangles of electric cable. It was things that one would expect to find in Charlie's room. He shifted over to a large green chest, the paint almost entirely worn off. He grabbed the handle and heaved it open, immediately shuddering before pushing himself away from the chest. He whispered for Jessica to come look and when she did, her face fell. Curled up with a blanket and pillow inside the large chest, was Charlie, the REAL Charlie. She was breathing. John snapped out of his shock and lifted her out of the chest. She could feel him pick her up in her deep sleep. The body heat from his body warmed her and she knew she was alive.

Clay Burke's reinforced door.

John returned home from Clay Burke's home to a noise from his bedroom, a small voice repeating something with static between the phrases. He investigated the sound and discovered that it came from Theodore, the head of Charlie's childhood robot rabbit. It repeated "Shining Star, Silver Reef..." Over and over. He immediately took the rabbit back to Clay's house to show him his odd discovery. Clay's front door was wide open when he arrived, the light from inside spilled out onto the yard. He ran inside calling for him, still shouting, he made his way to Clay's office. He stopped. Clay laid flat on the floor in a pool of his own blood that came from his head. He still had a pulse, although it was faint. John looked around the room alarmed before stopping on the door. The hallway door was shredded to pieces, the only part of it left hung in place on the upper hinge. Clay had described this door as reinforced, and stood behind it with his gun when he heard a noise behind it.

John had asked Charlie on another date to distract her when she was just about to find the REAL Charlie he had hidden in his apartment. Before the date, John had given Jessica and Carlton a walkie talkie so they could listen in on their conversation, and they sat in a booth nearby to watch. While on the date, Charlie told him that she knew he was at Silver Reef with Jessica and asked him what they were doing there. She looked ravenous as she said this, probably because she was also there with them at that time, killing her own aunt. She had been brutally beating her aunt while they hid upstairs. She finally killed Jen after she whispered her last words, "I've always loved you Charlie." Charlie told her aunt that she loved her too, before ripping her stomach open. John noticed the look on her face and he tried covering himself by saying he was just a history buff. She asked again why he was there. This time, he confessed that he was looking for a friend. She asked him if they had found that friend, he told her that they had. The smile on her face disappeared and she asked "Where is she?" John told her that he was going to show everyone what she really was, and Charlie simply smiled again before thanking him for dinner and getting up to pay the bill. Jessica followed Charlie to see that she was actually paying the bill, before running outside through the back and hiding herself in the trunk of Charlie's car. After ten minutes of driving, the car stopped and Jessica waited several seconds after Charlie left the car to roll out of the trunk. They were stopped in front of Circus Baby's Pizza. She went up to the building and she peeked inside several different windows. She found a room that was dimly lit and voices came from inside although it appeared empty. Charlie appeared behind Jessica, telling her that she should've told her she was planning to come here. She asked her to come inside and Jessica refused. Charlie's smile stretched wider, her lips splitting at the middle as a wide seam appeared, bisecting her face from top to bottom. Charlie grew taller, her limbs segmenting at the joints like a doll. Her features faded and were replaced by a iridescent, clown painted metal face. "Do you like my new look?"
