Freedom involved: Freedom of speech.
Background: Students at a public school is Des Moines, Iowa, wore black armbands to the school to protest against the Vietnam War. The students were warned by the principal that they would be suspended if they continued to wear the armbands. The students ignored this warning and wore them anyway, resulting in their suspension. The mother of Mary Tinker sued the school on all of the suspended student's behalf for violating the student's right to free speech.
