What are the challenges regarding inequality in education?
Is education 'the great equaliser? Can it be?
According to conflict theorists, education prepares children for the ‘world of work’. How is this different from functionalism?
Conflict theorists think that the education system as we know it, justifies the existence of inequality in society. Explain how this happens, with a reference to the case discussed in the video.
The video discusses the education system in the US. How do you think the situation is, in your own country/UK? Can you show evidence?

Q1. Not a lot of people can get the same opportunities to get education , enhance their life quality, gender. For example, If a student who do have enough money and get in to a bad school, meanwhile, the school teacher also is bad , the school quality also bad, so it cant compare some good school or student.
Q2. I don’t think that education is the great equaliser and I don’t think that it can be the great equaliser. This is because every individual’s family background and financial situation already play a very important role in the admission to certain schools. Not everyone can afford to pay huge amounts of money to attend certain schools. Students from a richer background can have access to more resources and have a greater cultural capital therefore they can compete at a better level compared to other students. In fact, I think that education is a system that rather categorises students into different classes and promotes inequality.
Q3. Both functionalism and conflict theory portray education as a facilitator to prepare children for work in the future. In the case of functionalism, it is based on meritocracy and anyone who have a greater achievement regardless of their socio-economic status will thrive better in the workforce. On the other hand, conflict theorist uses education as a privilege for students who come from a better financial background and higher social status to gain the upper hand in the working community. In simple words, education for conflict theorists is a system that favours those in power.
Q4. In America, the education system is unjust in a way where they oppress the people of colour by limiting the amount and quality of education that they are able to receive. For example, white kids are able to enjoy a fully equipped library, well-maintained athletic facilities and so on. Besides, they are able to receive education at a faster paced compared to the people of colour. From the video, the people of colour are learning materials learned by other kids after years of delay. After a while all changes that they want to make towards the education system was to retrofit the design instead of stopping and abolishing the current system.
Q5. In Malaysia, schools are not intentionally segregating the people based on race or socio-economic status but it is inevitable that there are some forms of separation as not everyone can afford to attend private schools. In private schools, the majority of the students are Chinese and come from a better financial background while public schools have a wider variety of people.

1. Fully realize equality. Different regions and students may not enjoy the same educational resources and conditions, and are not affected by class and family background
2. It is true that through education one can change one's level and then change one's class. For example: poor people read books to improve their status
3. Functionalism: Let people rise or fall in the social structure, and ensure that important positions are participated by capable people. Education is relatively equal, but for conflict theory education, like social class, is not equal.
4. In the video, it is mentioned that at the beginning, white people and black people attend classes together, but later they are separated into different classes, which reflects that the education between them is not as equal as imagined at the beginning
5. Every province economic level are not different so schools in different provinces have different bouget, and the population is also different but the number of student who could get into Uni is limited, so there is a phenomenon that a student in this province who get 600 grade but cannot get into top 10 Uni but in another province a student who get 400 could get offer from top 10

1：Not everyone in the society gets the same opportunities to receive education. It is related to their family background and the social position.A kid born in a more wealthy family, they can get more resources to learn. Eg: buy more books,go to a better school, getting extra tutorial, joining study tour to gain experience

2:no

Although a good education system provides a chance for students to receive the basic knowledge. It makes sure everyone in the society has the ability to remain alive in the society.

However, since there is still a difference between different people receiving education. The people in the higher social position can get more resources to learn. So they can get more knowledge and experience.

3.According to functionalists Education is a tool for social mobility. and Through education, children learn shared norms and values and internalize the rules that facilitate the functioning of society.
4.The education a person gets may be related to his or her family's wealth, skin color and race, etc. Different backgrounds are in different education systems. For example, as mentioned in the video, because of race, students need to go to specialized schools farther away, get up earlier than neighbors, and spend more time on the road.
5. American education system is more focused on the student themselves. The school provides variety subjects for student tochoose and develop their own talent. Also, students need to beself-discipline to get a better grade in order to apply a gooduniversity. In China mainland, the situation is opposite compared to US. Mostteachers are pushing the students to learn knowledge. Thegovernment provides the textbooks and curriculums forstudents which is usually defined as exam-oriented education. In Hong Kong, most of the students in the top ranking school are born in a more wealthy family. Those students are receiving more resources such as joining some extra tutorial courses and going to a private school which is better.Compare with the children come from lower class family they will have more opportunities to learn.

What are the challenges regarding inequality in education?

One of the challenges regarding inequality of resources and opportunity distribution, e.g some students may have resources to support their education, e.g labs for scientist students.

Another challenge is geographic differences of the students, that some students may take longer time to go to school because they don’t live near the school while others do.

And another challenge regarding inequality is the language and cultural barrier one may face.

Is education 'the great equaliser? Can it be?

Yes, but it is unlikely because of the differences in economic background, that some students may face a more difficult situation while receiving their education. Some students may get more resources, like private tutor.

Yes, because it can prolong life expectancy.

Not exactly. Education is an equalizer that can help people to mobilitize to upper social classes, but it is not a great equalizer. Take Skye’s cousins and her background for example. She came from a working to middle class family however, her cousin came from a middle class, so she doesn’t have the opportunity to get as much resources as her cousins. Thus, when she try to be something as great as being a doctor, i.e being an architect, it is much harder for her to do that.

According to conflict theorists, education prepares children for the ‘world of work’. How is this different from functionalism?

Functionalism see education as a way to assign a role for kids in the future society, regardless of their intelligence or their ability, while conflict theorist view education as a system to pick up those who are intelligent and put them in the role that suits them;

Conflict theorists think that the education system as we know it, justifies the existence of inequality in society. Explain how this happens, with a reference to the case discussed in the video.

Take the case mentioned in the video, that the speaker’s kid don’t have much resources like books and libraries because it is a black school. Same thing would not happen in a white school. This is likely because of the historical background relating to black and white people in 1800s.

The video discusses the education system in the US. How do you think the situation is, in your own country/UK? Can you show evidence?

In Hong Kong, families tends to provide a lot of extra-curricular activities and private tutors to their kids in order to have a better portfolio when applying for schools. However, not a lot of families can provide these extracurricular activities.

In Hong Kong, the schools tends to provide more resources and opportunities to science related subjects than subjects related to liberal arts because science subjects are tends to be related to more professional degrees which can provide a higher income.

In US, it is more higher chance the succeed when they apply for sports.
