Despite this, she worked hard - juggled jobs in Manila and eventually got to work abroad. At that point, Mama had an entirely different life. She can finally afford things that she couldn't before. She could send herself to a university. She can live comfortably independently. But all those opportunities, she chose not to do. Rather, she sent all her money to Lolo and Lola. When she got home, she built a house for the family and even sponsored the education of her nieces and nephews. She started businesses for the whole family and even gave capital money to my aunts and uncles. When I asked her why she did all those, she said because that is the exact purpose of why she was working hard - to help her family experience a better life.

Pansol (if my memory serves me right) for a disaster risk reduction assessment paper which was a requirement for one of our classes. We were assigned to a family to help us gauge their situation about the frequent disasters that affect them. There were multiple aspects of this that are good reminders to practice magis. (1) Although it was a requirement, we were given the opportunity to meet with the people we will be talking about in our paper. It reminds us that these people live real lives and are not just a mere source of facts to use. As a SOSE major, that is something I never want to forget. (2) It was also a great opportunity to help them as the paper we made aimed to address the aspects of their living environment that pose a hazard to their safety. It gave a really good sense of being able to help other people with the work that we were able to do. (3) Talking to the family, we get a glimpse of the life they live. The only people present were the mother and her daughter, but we found out that the others weren’t present because they were working or studying in their province. With that, it’s apparent that they really do their best to provide the best opportunities for their family. The experience overall was a great reminder that as we live in a society, we have to be conscious that people around us go through different things that we may never know or hear about.
